Dramatic stoma size increase early on

Finally had my perm. Ileo last thursday (today is monday). Nurse did my first change in the hospital and the little buggar was about an inch diameter pink and perfect as could be.

I changed my pouch and wafer this morn and my pittle stoma is now about 1-3/4 inches diameter! It basically scaled up in size by 75 percent.

I called the nurse line and will also talk on the phone to stoma nurse in the morning. Im not having any troubling signs: appetite is great and stoma looks good with good output. The thing just got waayy bigger in 2 days.

Anyone else experience this?

That never happened to me....... it could just be residaul swelling??? I suppose as long as you have output, & no pain... weird though! Have you talked with the nurse yet? It's still really early post-op, & things change rapidly. Keep an eye on it & let us know what the nurse says!

I've never had them grow diameter wise but have seen mine move in and out. Sometimes a little above my skin level then will grow outwards and stick out much further

I would think it might be swelling, like Eva said. I heard usually they shrink a bit, but mine was 1 inch and shrunk maybe a mm or 2, and that's all. Some people have more drastic change in size, but i think it usually shrinks, not gets bigger.

Talked with ostomy nurse this morning. She isn't worried given that the size is now stable and the output and appearance are ok. I'll update if anything changes.

In general, I have a very small stoma (3/4") but depending on my eating habits/time of day/how active I've been my stoma can be about 1 1/2". I don't change my wafer size and usually if I place a warm towel over my stoma it will go back to the smaller size.

BUT if you are experiencing vomiting/pain/discoloration get to your doctor or ER.
