Rectal discharge with ileostomy

Hi I just had my total proctocolectomy surgery 9 days ago. I am having a very difficult time recovering, and it is making me exhausted and frustrated and upset.

Anyway, I have been having an increased amount of rectal discharge since leaving the hospital. It's grayish in color, and smells similar to stool. I get pains in my stomach, and then have to release the discharge. I've had several accidents as there's a sense of urgency with it.. I feel like this isn't normal, since I just got surgery to prevent this issue :(

I am a female and was diagnosed four years ago, currently am 22.

The discharge is mucus and it could also be mixed with some stool. This is totally normal. They failed to tell me when I left the hospital that I may have some discharge and I remember calling my surgeon's office freaking out. They really need to tell us these things. As long as you're not in any kind of serious pain, the cramping is normal too. Give a call to your surgeon to ease your mind.

Healing takes time. You just had major major surgery. It gets better but in the meantime be patient with yourself. I know it's hard not to get frustrated. I remember that all too well. Hope you feel better soon!

That soon after surgery there is a lot of healing still going on. Did you have your rectum and anus removed for a permanent ostomy or did you have step 1 for jpouch?

I remember also being so frustrated at that point and why didn't I feel better faster. It was hard for me to be patient but patience is key. The first 2-3 weeks were very hard. Then somewhere close to a month it seemed like things started getting better each day.

after my step one surgery creating my j-pouch, I passed mucus every day and a few times a day. It started out darker and thick (definitely some blood) and eventually it became pretty clearish in color. Your intestines will still produce mucus regardless if it's an active portion of your digestive tract.

I had that from about 2-7 weeks post surgery. Mine was light yellow and didn't smell too bad, but it was constant. I wore Depends at all times. It was so bad at night that I would have leaks and usually I couldn't make it through without getting a new a fresh one at some point. The discharge would come with an anal cramp, sometimes minor, sometimes severe. I took pain medicine at night to deal with it. Anyway, it just went away at 7 weeks and I'm back to underwear! I have my takedown next week and I'm not sure what to expect, like if I will have to wear them again.
