Surgical adhesion causes bladder pressure post Colostomy

Yes, my subject title describes my issue. I did not this issue before Colostomy. Within year, my bladder capacity reduced, resulting in frequent bathroom trips and awoke me countless nights, a major disruption to sleep. After 2 years of seeing multiple Urologists, I am told that the cause is surgical adhesion. My Doctor says this is uncommon. Is there anyone who has this issue too? I would appreciate hearing from other uncommon patient(s).

I recently had JPouch reversal surgery because after 10 years it was failing. When my surgeon opened me up he was very tempted to stop because of so many adhesions. In fact he called my wife to discuss it and she convinced him to go on. He said amongst other things my bladder was distended and has so many adhesions. In the end he didn't remove the JPouch because the adhesions were on so many vital bits like my bladder. I am learning to adapt, and use the old age mantra... Never trust a fart or give up a bathroom opportunity!

I used to win all bets at the pub for the last one to 'break the seal' after drinking beer, but these days I would be the first, as my capacity is significantly reduced. I too have to wake up on most nights to go

I constantly feel the need to urinate, so I just go every two hours.

I have an Interstim neurostimulator that stimulates the sacral nerves and is supposed to help with urinary problems. I've tried many "programs" (square waves with different amplitude, frequency, duty-cycle), but none have helped.

You can get a trial Interstim. They put wires in your lower back, tape over the incisions, and you wear a trial unit on your belt for two weeks. If it helps you, you can get the permanent one installed. Very minor outpatient procedure and no short-term side effects. Long-term the semiconductors / heavy metals in the device might cause poisoning or cancer.

Its up to you but you might not want to bother. You can just keep an eye on the clock and urinate every 2-3 hours. And you can still get good sleep even when you wake several times / night.

Richard, thanks for posting. It seems that there isn't anything Doctors can do about surgical adhesion( ?). I am told to do Pelvic Relaxation exercises (maybe because I am female?). Just started this, so don't know if it helps yet. I will post again if it does help.

Thanks for posting. Instead of Interstim, my Urologist mentioned about Botox injection to the bladder, but the side effects discouraged me. The long term adverse effect of Intersim that you mentioned is not desirable either. Aren't we between a rock and a hard spot?

I too have abdominal adhesions! I've had gallbladder , appendix and hysterectomy that add to, too many adhesions. I have also had them cut out several times and in the 2 years I have had full open surgery, due to the density of the adhesions.

I have to take pain and zofran daily. Sometimes whole pills sometimes half pills , just depends on the pain and how it is.

I find myself also not peeing as much as normal. I know there where my pain is located is upper stomach, so I don't know if I'm just kinked ! Either one can make you very miserable.

So questions I NEED HELP with
1. Do I just continue my linzess or milk of magnesia (the linzess is taken every other day)
OR
2. What helps with you not urinating like normal???
3. Have any of you tried massage for adhesions????? I've read a little on it
3. I'm reading a little about your diet and relating it to adhesions? Where can I find such a diet?
4. Naturally you don't want more surgeries but I am so upset at waking up in the mornings not knowing if it will pass and it will be over.
Any help I would appreciate!!!!!

Hi, I too have experienced bladder problems but it wasn't from my original surgery for my ileostomy but rather when I had the last couple of inches of my anus removed last year and sewn shut. Not sure if it's from adhesions, nerve damage. The surgeon said basically your bladder rest on top of your rectom so it may have let it shift after they took the last bit out. Just don't know what's causing it but it has affected my life tremendously. So far the only things that have helped are acupuncture and some Chinese herbs that I got from the acupuncturist. The herbs gave me a headache though so I had so go off them but they don't recommend you take them constantly anyway. I get acupuncture once a week and at least I can get out of the house better now.
