Can this be done for CD?

Released ft hospital after 6 weeks only to abscess within hours. I can't believe no one mentioned a k pouch while there. What am I missing?

Did you have a regular ileo? Perhaps the plan is to reconnect after your bowels have time to heal?

No, in a nutshell. Nor can the titanium implant I was so interested in - my surgeon poured cold water all over the idea sad

The k-pouch isn't given to Crohn's patients for the same reasons that j-pouches aren't: it's made out of your small bowel. It's actually probably even more unsuitable than the j-pouch, because there is a narrow one-way valve which is also made out of the small bowel - imagine getting a stricture or fistula there.

I've heard and read about kpouches or bcir, but I have to admit, I don't think I've seen any member here who has one. I have seen a few posters elsewhere when I was doing research who said they had it and loved it, but from what I could gather, it seemed like it was generally not the most well-liked or tolerated, and therefore not very common. I would imagine you would need to really seek out the correct surgeon to be offered it as an option, but like NCOT said, maybe it wouldn't be an option for someone with Crohn's anyway. I think you empty just as much as you do with any other pouch, you just have to have a catheter, which actually seems like more of a hassle, but it's nice to not need too many products aside from that. I know you have the skin issues, so any type of surgery would be risky. I really hope you find a solution soon. I have a girlfriend who had surgery and it hasn't put an end to her problems, so you really never know.

Clo---thank you for the support. Was discharged as I couldn't commit to surgery & they were just giving me pain meds. I'm home & abscessing. Extremely weak. Good thing about hospitals is that they feed you bedside. I'm having trouble with this. But it's good to be home & with dog. I'm sleeping a lot & taking Ativan. I meet with my GI on Tues to get Stelara started. Fingers crossed.

I hope you are feeling better. I think of you daily and hope you have the support network you need.

It is very hard to commit to surgery. I understand 109%... In a way it was easier for me. I had a stricture, we had tried 2 dilations, there weren't any other options and I was screaming in pain all the time. (Its much easier to commit when you're backed into a corner....Lol...and I hope you never have to go there!)

Now I wonder why I fought it so hard..but everyone is different....and you have to remember I am older, I am married and I have already had children. ..3 HUGE reasons to choose a different path...just 1 is reason enough....and there are lots of other reasons out there...

We did a colostomy because we thought we would try to save as much as we could because.....well just in case....and he thought that I would have issues with scaring if he did an ileo and then tried to resection me back in 2 places instead of 1. They thought with fistulizing Crohns there could be issues with more abscesses and fistulas with an increased number of resection areas...but that's just me. Heck....you look at me wrong and I start sprouting a darrrrn fistula.sigh...

I hope they can start you on Stelara soon. I have heard wonderful things about it. Please keep us informed. I hope your doctor visit goes well.

On the bedside food. ...if you have ice chests and thermoses...have your helper make extra and store it there beside you. I had drinks and jello in the ice chest, crackers and pretzels on the night stand by a thermos of hot drink and soup. We had TV trays down the side of the bed with just enough room to get up and down. It was messy but it worked.... I felt like I didn't have to call out for help for every little thing. I could open the thermos myself!!! Lol. One little ice chest and 2 thermoses and I felt more independent....

Anyway,
