About to go for surgery!!!

Hi Guys

I usually post in the Crohn's Disease forums, but a friend told me abouthis so i have a few questions.

I have CD and was diagnosed in October last year. I will be going for a resection next week and will be temporarily having the bag till next June.

I am 16 and in grade 12 at high school.

This has already been a very tough thing to come to terms with and i would just like to hear from you and find out How does it really affect your life? There are ( as all schools ) very nosy and very ( excuse my language ) immature and *****y people at school that i know if they find out will make it a joke and really try to bring me down. I believe i am dealing with enough as i have only had this for 7 months and already having surgery!!

How did you all deal with other people and their comments and opinions?

And how did you deal with the whole * Body acceptance *?

Hi Harmony, I am quite new here too, used to be on the Ulcerative Colitis site and have had a bag since Feb, expecting reconstruction around end of June. I'm sorry to hear that you are expecting some unkind and stupid remarks from your schoolmates. It is a shame they have to know about it at all but you can't easily keep these things secret in a school environment, so you will have to be strong. I hope you have one or two close friends who will support you and help you deal with any nastiness. Best to ignore it as much as possible - if you don't react, they won't get any satisfaction and you will know that they are behaving like that because they are not mature enough to deal with it and it frightens them.

Body acceptance has been - is - hard for me. I am glad I had the surgery because I have my life back (I couldn't leave the house for about a year) but I am waiting waiting for the next op and hoping fervantly that it will be a success. If you do find it hard, just remember the alternative and that it is temporary. I wish you all the best - ignore the negative people, and take all the positive thoughts and care that you can from the people that love you. gillian

Kids can be so mean..........The best defense you can have is to be able to laugh it off.  It might be really hard but once they see that their jokes and taunts don't bother you they'll move on to picking on someone else.

You might want to visit www.ccfa.org  I believe they have a section especially for teens.

Hi Harmony

I've had my ileostomy since I was 10 years old so know what it's like to go through school with one.

The only people who ever knew about my bag were my teachers and my closest friends. The rest of the kids knew I'd had abdominal surgery but didn't really know the details of it - and that's the way I liked it.

My ostomy did get me out of sports (no reason it should really except I hated sports and the teachers didn't know any better and I wasn't about to tell them :) ). What good is having major surgery if you can't play on it once in a while :)

My surgery was due to UC and I've had my ileo for 30 years so far and it has never really been a problem for me. Sure, there are a few teething problems in the beginning, just like with anything in life but once you get those teething problems fixed, life can be 'normal' just like those with bowels intact. I've traveled the world, ridden elephants and camels, been rock climbing, swim regularly every summer, etc all without a problem.

WOW thanks guys. i guess i sort of already knew these things but needee to hear it from people who ca say it actually works!!!

Shaz, i think you are just awesome, at 10 years old, i dont even think i would have known what the word surgery meant lol...., and all the things you still do , i am inspired.

So thanks again to everyone that replied, i will keep you posted on how everything goes.
