A question about mornings with an ileostomy

Hello,

I reading another post earlier today and something in there caught my eye and got me thinking!  I was wondering how people's ileostomies function when they wake up in the mornings.  Ever since I had my surgery I wake up in the morning and as soon as I get moving my bag will fill up two or three times with just straight liquid.  I always thought this was weird since mornings are supposed to be the quietest times for ostomies.  And once this happens mine usually is until I eat breakfast.  I am wondering if this is a normal occurance or whether I might have some kind of excess stomach acid that I could get under control through medication.  It sure can be annoying since it happens every morning and I am concerned about going back to teaching and having to deal with a full bag every morning unless I get up super early to try and get it under control before I leave my house.  And who would I ask about this...could i ask my surgeon who I am seeing on thursday for a follow-up or should I ask my family doctor?  Any thoughts??

Hi earthgirl.

Mornings are a busy time for my stoma too. Like you .I have to empty as soon as I get out of bed. Very often as soon as I have had my first cup of tea I need to empty again,and then once again after breakfast. After this I find it all goes quiet on me for quite a few hours. I wouldnt say mine is straight liquid like you describe but it is usualy thinner than when I empty at other times through the day.

What colour is the liquid earthgirl? Sometimes I do get a yellow frothy liquid first thing in the morning which I presume is to do with stomach acids,its only a very tiny amount when that happens though.

If you are seeing your surgeon on Thursday it cant hurt to ask him about it. Let me know what he says.

Bag lady,

I saw my surgeon yesterday and he said that my stomach/ostomy should not be that active before eating in the mornings so he prescribed a drug called Ranitidine.  It's used to reduce the amount of acid secreted by the stomach.  He said to try it out to see if it might help.  I took one last night just before I went to bed and have already noticed a big difference.  I only emptied my bad twice before I left for work, which is 2 times less than yesterday!
