I am retired so, can have the liesure of doing nothing if I wish, I WAS WONDERING IF, IT WOULD BE BENIFICAL AFTER SHOWERING TO ATTACH A BAG TO MY SELF WITH JUST AN OSTOMY BELT FOR AN HOUR OR SO AND LEAVE MYSELF WAIFER FREE TO LET MY SKIN RELAX AN HAVE EXPOSURE TO THE AIR

1 MONTH OSTOMY

If you do, make sure you're not wearing white clothing! There's no way that's gonna work!

That depends on what state your skin is in. Do you have rashes and sores? Are you using antimicrobial powder? If you use the powder your skin should be fine and its then not necessary to give it lengthy air time. My skin has shown rashes from time to time as I have a wound vac and a stoma and it's summer so mosture often occurs under the tape and wafer. However, every time I've used the powder the rash disappears successfuly!

But if you have time to sit with the pouch off and you feel more comfortable that way do it. I will warn you though- I was tempted to do that in the beginning when I came home from the hospital. Now I see that I wouldn't have adjusted to the pouch if I had done that. It takes time to mentally and physically adjust to every aspect of the stoma. It's been a couple months for me and I still don't feel 100% adjusted!

I seriously would not reccomend going without.  Your ostomy will "go" at will.  If you could sit with a plastic lined trash basket under your stoma .... maybe.  But so long as you are not having any skin breakdown I would apply my appliance continually.   I remove my appliance in the shower.  After showering it is the last thing I do, take the old one off.  And place it in a lined trash basket next to the shower.  When I get out of the shower I hold or wedge the basket between my leg and the sink and use a blow dryer to make sure the skin is good and dry and then I reapply a new appliance.  I've done this for years.  And it seems to be a good program since I get no less than 7 days wear from one appliance.  Even in the heat and humidity of the summer.  yeah

The only time the skin around my stoma is exposed to the air is during my shower when I change my bag once a week... and that's been the same for 31 years. If your skin is fine, don't worry - it doesn't need 'air exposure', it will survive without it.

If you have a colostomy and irrigate it, then you might have some guarantee that you are going to be 'stool free' for a while, but if you don't irrigate or if you have an ileostomy, then your stoma will go as it likes and you could end up in a mess.

I don't wear a belt, but I thought the belt attached to the wafer rather than the bag itself?

Steviegirl....What type of wafer are you using to get 7 days? What do you do while showering between wafer changes. Do you use paste or anything else...do you have to get up during the night to empty? I just put an old towel down when my wafer/bag is off and getting ready to put on. I opted for Coloplast because they had a high output bag I use for all night and use small one for the day! I usually get 6 days..but the heat/sweat of Houston can kill mine during gardening and my new 1/2 marthon training! One lady in our ostomy group puts a baggie on hers to have an off time from wafer....she has really bad skin reactions to wafers and has to use the older Kaya? brand.
