strange question for folks w/ no colon

Ok, this is a strange question. But when you had your colon removed did your doctor weigh it? I was SHOCKED when my doctor told me that all these years I have been carrying a monster inside my abdomen. My colon weighed about 15 pounds!!!!

And that was only after I did 4 colonics to get my colon cleaned out for the surgery. He said that normally, it probably weighed anywhere from 20 to 25 pounds.

It's no wonder I always looked like I was about 6 months pregnant.

My doctor did not tell me the weight of my colon, but here's a math question:
My pre-surgery weight was 120, and my post-surgery weight is 135. If the colon that they removed weighed 20 pounds, and I've gained 15 since my surgery, does that really mean that I've gained 35 pounds?!? sad

My colon was empty when it was removed in surgery.  It weighed less then one pound.  I guess that's the difference between those with UC and those with motility disorders!

I asked my Dr about this. I was afraid that after my colon was removed my stomach would cave inward and I would look sick. My Dr giggled and told me that the colon one weights a couple pounds at most.

Cecilia - I always gain 20 pounds from surgery. It is all of the fluid that they flush in me. It usually takes me a week or two to pee out all of the water and then I am back to normal.

That works for me! I'm just a little bloated from surgery, which was 18 months ago! yeah

i think i read somewhere that an empty colon weighs 12.5 oz. I was worried that my small instensitnes would just flop all around in there without my colon to hold them up, lol.

For me, my colon was just HUGE. It was stretched out and floppy. Now that it's gone I see a physical difference in my stomach.

WOW! That is huge! I had just the opposite. My surgeon did not believe me when I told him that I'd never had any of my colon removed. Mine was really short. My gastro said it had to do with all the scar tissue from my Crohn's.

if i ever get the total colectomy.....i would want the doc to put a time capsule (with random stuff of no particualr significance) in place of my colon....that would sure bewilder any anthropologists when they unburied my ancient remains sometime in the distant future...
