Day 3 of Stiz Marker Study and don't think I can finish it

I am doing a 5 day Stiz Marker study. I took the pill on Sunday and had xrays on Monday and Wednesday, but it's 2:30am Thursday morning and I'm hurting so much I don't think I can wait till Friday to do the last xray.

I'm thinking of calling my doctor's office as soon as they open and telling them I can't finish this it's too painful. I haven't gone to the bathroom so I know all the markers were still there on the xray. I asked the tech to let me see the xray and they looked pretty scattered throughout the abdomen.

Anyone have any suggestions? I'm sure my doctor isn't going to like it if I don't finish this test. What do you think? Do they really need to see day 5?

I feel so bad for you....I know what it is like.  Hang in there.  Use a heating pad on your belly and drink some tea or something warm if you can.  I think it is important they see that last x-ray.  You don't want to have to go through this test again. 

So your were scattered?  It definately sounds like you have colonic inertia.

I read that having over 20% of the markers remaining by day 5 indicates colonic inertia. Does them being scattered indicated it also?

I went to the bathroom this morning. Altho it felt good to be able to go I'm concerned some markers came out and they'll not be enough left to justify having the operation.

I had a marker study done 2 years ago but the dummy GI doc I was seeing ordered it wrong and only had me go in on day 3 for an xray, but that xray indicated 17 markers left. This time I know all 24 were there on day 3.

I wonder if most of the markers are gone if they will still do the surgery. I am going to be polite, but demanding that the surgeon do the surgery. I don't care what the test say I can't live with this any longer.

I'm happy to hear that you were finally were able to go to give yourself some relief. If the markers are scattered, that indicates that something is working but doesn't necessarily mean a normal result. It's the amount of markers left and their location that will tell them where the problem is.

It's no big deal if some of the markers came out. You certainly don't want to try holding a BM just to keep them in. You'll probably need to undergo other tests before surgery would be scheduled. They need to make sure your rectum is working correctly before undergoing the surgery.

They already did all the pelvic floor function tests. The nurse said I was in the good range so they can hook up the small intestines to my rectum.

23 out of the 24 markers were still left. Most of the markers were on my left side which the surgeon indicated they most likely would be when he ordered the test. He seems really smart. I feel like I'm in good hands w/ him, which is a good thing.

Okay, this post has been staring me in the face every time I'm on this site. What is this test? What info. does the doc get from it? I've never heard of it before.

ME congrats on finishing the test! I know this has been bothering you for a while and everything seemed to workout for the best. It sounds like you have a wonderful doctor. Thanks for the update!

Just,

The Sitz marker test is where you swallow a pill that has 24 little rings. They take 3 xrays thru out the week to see where the markers are. It shows how the colon is functioning.

Does that help explain it?

:-)  I just took the pill and will be starting my x-rays tomorrow for the 5 days. Guess I am suppose to eat as normal. I hope this helps, will pray that it does.  I can relay with all of you on the pain of being constipated. I have a spinal cord stimulator, but I assume the pill will not affect it.

God is good and knows we are here, do not despair, stay strong, and always have hope.

I took this test a few months back, and thought for sure I would pass since I had a BM 2 times during the test! (Miralax was still in my system) but day five arrived and I still had 24 markers in. 1/2 were scattered in the transverse and left colon, and 13 were stuck in the sigmoid colon.

Glad to see you made it through   :-)  . I had this test 2 weeks ago. The pain and the pressure were bad. My test was 5 days as well, had no BMs, so I still had all my markers.

Did you say that most of the markers were on the left side (sigmoid)? Are they going to do a total colectomy or partial?

The reason I ask is that when my test results came back, my doc said the markers were scattered all over the ascending, transverse and descending colon, which was supposed to mean that the whole colon was not moving material through, whereas if the markers were on the left side, the ascending and transverse were working (at least to some degree). If that's true, just wondering, why they would feel the need to remove the whole colon and connect the small to the rectum.

If I seem new to this, I guess I am. I can see you've suffered longer than I.

I AM TAKING THE PILL TOMORROW. AND HAVING A COLONOSCOPY ON THE 12TH. DO YOU HAVE WEIGHT GAIN? I HAVE GAINED about 20 LBS. ALL IN THE BELLY REGION. MY STOMACH IS SO SWOLLEN AT TIMES, LOOKS LIKE I AM 9 MONTHS PREGNANT. I CAN'T EAT BECAUSE I FEEL FULL AFTER ONLY EATING A COUPLE BITES OF SOMETHING. THEN I AM IN PAIN.

I also took the marker pill yesterday and suppose to do my first x ray in 5 days. The radiologist said it's very important that it is in 5 days. I also haven't gone to the bathroom much because this has been my problem for a year. My system doesn't work and they can't find out why. I've tried everything. Why do you think your in pain from taking the marker pill?

Bloated and Hurting.

I hope you have a better outcome than I did. And you very well may!! My doctors were blown away by my case for several different reasons.

I had your exact symptoms off and on for months and then misdiagnosed right before the blood started. I had/have UC. I'm now between surgery 2 and takedown for a JPouch. Mine was bad and not responding to meds. My bloating was my colon. The entire thing was bloated up to the width of a softball (it usually is a wide as a golf ball).

I hope you get a treatment for whatever your diagnosis is soon and it works great for you.
