I still have my rectum and anus, and it's been 17+ years since my first ostomy surgery. Whether or not they can or will reconnect will depend on how much bowel you have, the nature of your disease, and your willingness to go through a "training period" of your bowel when reconnected.
In the interim, you need to have your rectum checked routinely, which for me is whenever I have a colonoscopy, I'm already drugged so they check it out, usually take biopsies to make sure there's no displasia.
