hi people! As usual, more questions... this topic is really my only concern after surgery. I've heard some horror stories regarding yeast infections & such & am hoping to avoid it. The ENT nurse I met with the other day said that in reality, infections like that are pretty uncommon. I know you're supposed to use a PH balanced soap... like what kind????? And aside from the obvious allergic reactions to any one wafer, seal, etc., have any of you had major problems with this issue? I do believe less is more, when it comes to products, so I'm hoping to just use the wafer & the bag. When I tried on wafers, they seemed to fit pretty snugly, the pediatric ones, with no gapping. Is the stoma powder useful to prevent irritation?

Eva..you are way ahead in your thinking! That is GREAT! You are absolutely correct...you can get a yeast infection. I developed one about a week after surgery. My Dr called me in a prescription of Nystatin Powder to put under my wafer. I applied this power and then put No-Sting spray on top (wafers do not stick to powder..you must use the spray to cover it). If I use soap under my wafer, I usually use Dial. However, I usually only use hot water and no soap.

Can you wear standard bags with pediatric wafers? I was suppose to use a pediatric wafer as well; however, I cannot locate them in my Edgepark catalog and I have been too lazy to reseach which company sells them and how to get some samples sent to me.

yeah Amey, you can use a standard bag with pediatric wafers! I have a coloplast catalogue at home, and their Assura line is interchangeable- I think they have about 3-5 pediatric wafers, which can be used with any of the "green" Assura bags. They color code everything... I plan to request samples ASAP. Even the size difference in the pediatric bags vs. adult bags is only about 2 inches, so it would mean one more emptying per day, maybe. And since the ENT nurses I'll be dealing with in the hospital already know that I may use a pediatric wafer, hopefully they will order me some. What's No-Sting spray? Is it a product from one of the manufacturers, or one of those body fluid blocking sprays? I actually have something by 3M, some skin blocking spray to use on wounds, stomas, any place body fluids may come in conatct with your skin. I think it was a freebie from my last hospital stay. I knew I hung on to it for a reason!

No Sting spray is from 3m and it's a great skin barrier if you have sensitive skin. I too am very small and haven't heard of the pediatric wafers! I'd like to know! I am 4' 11" and weigh about 85 pounds ...

I wouldn't use the powder unless you find you're having skin problems. It just makes things a little harder, getting your flange to stick, and it's usually not necessary.

Amey, why do you continue to use the powder? I've had only 1 yeast infection in 18 years with an ostomy, and it was iffy as to what the problem really was, and I've been on antibiotics for years at a time because of my CD and had yeast in other places I'd rather not talk about, lol.

I just use an antibacterial soap (dial or Lever, or any of them) under my wafer which removes all the oils also and helps the flange to stick. I also use a skin barrier (3M no sting) to protect my skin when taking the wafer off.
