I just received a gift certificate to a spa and the lady highly recommended body wrapping. Do you think it would be hard on the stoma? I have no idea just how tight they wrap these things and wondered if any of you have any experience.

justjenjen,I don't know what body wrapping is for sure and its sounds great, but, I would probably ask the doctor about that one, if your doc says yes please tell how the experience was. I bet its relaxing, and you'll have to fill us all in on the details on how it went. :-) Bluz

I would call the spa and ask if they have clients with ostomies. I'm sure it won't hurt your ostomy, but depending on the heat aspect it may make your appliance not stick? I would get more details, explain it the the spa, I'm sure they've seen and heard just about everything.

is that the stuff with the sea weed? could you just have them not wrap that part?

I have no idea what they actually use to wrap. I think I may just ask the spa if they have had any experience with it. I would ask my ET but last time I had a question along similar lines she had no idea. Thanks for your input. Besides a possible wrapping I'm definitely getting a manicure and pedicure; everything else is up in the air at this point. Decisions, decisions...

hi there!

as you know i handle ins. claims....some of our insureds are beauty salons, etc....

Body wraps do require you to be quite exposed so make sure you will be comfortable with the person doing it. You should be able to go ahead, but you might want to fast a little beforehand to slow down the output. and make sure you bring a spare pouch.

I am going to have to get back to you with the story about my first body massage after surgery.....let's just say the women was not expecting to see what she saw when I got undressed before the massage.

LOL Glad Bag! I got a massage 3 weeks post-op. My bag was low enough that is stayed under the towel the entire time and I had the massage early in the day before I ate anything so it was empty and flat!

This reminds me of the card a patient gave us when I used to sell ostomy supplies.  It had a picture of an older man and woman on the front in hospital gowns, walking down the hallway with their IV poles.  The woman said to the man "are you happy to see me or is that a colostomy bag?"

We framed it, it was a classic.

about massages - I am still afraid of laying flat on my stomach. Is it really okay to do so? The bag doesn't leak or pop?

as long as your deal is empty right before, you should be okay for a little while, just bring a spare in case something terible happens, and don't eat before for a while....maybe take some vicodin to slow things down too..

I've had a body wrap, but it was before I received my ileostomy. I did leave my underwear on. They do wrap you really tight because the purpose is to remove all the excess fluid and toxins out of your body. I'm sure the person wrapping you could leave the area over the stoma more loose.
