Hi,

I'm new so I hope I'm doing this wright.  I was diagnosed with parkinsn's two months ago and was given sinement.  I have been reading articles that suggest Requip would be better to start with because it does not have the tremors, etc. that develop later on.  I thnk I also read that cinement can be adjusted as time goes by.

Any thoughts on this?  I want to start on the right track.   Stained glass Lady

I have also read that it is best to start on Requip or Mirapex because they don't have as many side effects. I stared on Requip but it made me feel naseous so I switched to Mirapex and had the same problem. I am now on Sinimet and it makes me a little queasy but I can tolerate it. I was 48 when dx'd and I think age has something to do with it. The side effects of Sinimet don't occur sometimes for years so for older patients it may be less of an issue. I have been having sort of involuntary head shaking problems and I am concerned they are from the Siniment (I have only been on it for about a year). yeah

Everyone is different so you have to decide what works for you. If you are concerned that you doctor jumped too quickly to Sinimet, think about switching doctors. I am about to try a 3rd doctor. The first was very indecisive, th second is in too much of a hurry and I am going to keep looking until I find the right one. Hopefully the third time is a charm.

Thank you for your advice.  I'm 69 so maybe my prescription is ok.  Tomorrow doctor is probably going to add another drug, so we will see what that is supposed to do.  Again, thank you.

Having been diagnosed so young perhaps you should be taking Azilect instead of Sinemet. It has been shown to slow the progression of the disease. I was diagnosed last October at 65 years old and put on Sinemet. When I read the short and long term side effects I said to myself "this is not right". Neurologist refused to try any other meds. Found another Neuro that is also a movement disorder specialist. He agreed that Sinemet was not the best choice right now. Prescribed Azilect. Does not control all tremors, but one Artane a day does. I feel great and can do whatever I want. I walk a lot and run with my dog. Azilect is expensive, but I am worth it.

Dan, Thanks for the info. I am taking Azilect already--I started it right away because I heard it slows progression of the disease.

I am going to a new doc soon and going to look for an alternative to Sinimet. I am only 49 so am very concerned about side-effects.

I am not familiar with Artane so will ask about it. My main symptom is Dystonia in my right foot which makes it very hard to walk. The Sinimet does help but I have read there may be other choices.

Yes--my current doc is a movement disorder specialist and is a world-renowned expert on Parkinson's but I think he is better as a research doctor than he is at treating patients.
