The
opening scene of It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World ends with the death of Jimmy Durante. As he dies his foot kicks out and knocks a bucket down the hill. We face our fears by laughing at them. Everyone knows a joke about
a hearse picking up a hitchhiker, a little later the hearse is stolen and so forth. If you never heard Lewis Grizzard "Sitting Up with the Dead" then you haven't laughed. Sometime around 1970 I was carrying a box of stuff down the spiral staircase in the girl's dorm (don't ask) when I slipped and fell, spraining my ankle. It really hurt and apparently I made some noise as I was soon surrounded. Of course I couldn't cry, but I found that I couldn't stop laughing. That's when I learned that sometimes you either have to laugh or cry. Now sometimes a good cry is what you need, but only on the right occasion. More often a good laugh is what will do you some good. All of this is by way of explanation as to why my remarks frequently contain a lame attempt at being funny. I will never make fun of someone or their situation, but I have stated elsewhere that I seem to be getting the PD mask and frown without even knowing it and I prefer to smile. If there is a point to this rambling it must be this, the old line about
meeting someone without a smile so you give them one of yours. There is a lot, and that is a gross understatement, going on in the world that makes me angry and frustrated, but see the line at the top of this^? That's a different type of mad and it's one that I reccomend. More later.
