My mom started taking the generic version of Mirapex 2 days ago. She's sleepy all the time and totally out of it. Generics really are not the same quality product as the original.

She's also having bathroom problems yet again. She does #2 once a week now and even then it's pretty much forced. I feel really bad for her. Her caretaker said she has no energy to push it out so it gets hardened and clogs her up. Her doctor has given her stool softener but the problem is they are like horse pills so she can't swallow them. So much catch 22 in her condition.

I read a couple of months ago that taking vitamin D supplement would help urinary incontinence so I had my mom on it. So far it seems to work now and then or maybe it was just a coincidence. Now the experts say D is good for the brain too. Boy, what these researchers come up with to continue receiving grant $ from rich folks who believe anything they come up with.

She's been on Mirapex for over 7 years and she's never gotten used to the sleepiness that comes with it. She gets sleep attacks where she can sit and sleep and wake up and fall asleep again. I can't take her anywhere because she falls asleep just like that. I took her to the park a few weeks ago and while we were taking a nice slow stroll, she suddenly closed her eyes and was dragging her feet and got ready to sit on the ground. She outweighs me by 20 pounds so I had a very hard time tugging her to my car for safety.

It's widely known that PD meds causes drowsiness. The older you are with it the more likely it will happen to you. My poor mom also has dementia so that adds on the burden for me. She cannot have a conversation with anyone. I do all the talking with her doctor when I take her. We are running out of drugs to try for her so she's staying put with Stalevo and Mirapex with Namenda for the dementiafor now. They all cause drowsiness so it's a losing battle.

RE bowel problems: You might consider trying Colace (stool softener) - it is not large and is easy to swallow.  You can buy it over the counter.  Increasing dietary fiber with bran cereal or something like that can help also.

Could you crush the 'horse pill and mix it w/food or drink?

My mum had breast cancer which went to her bones, the meds she was on caused her to be constipated from time to time. Going for a wek without a bowel movement is definately not good. The community nurses who came to check on mum, were most emphatic that she not go more than three days without a movement and they had as their final weapon something referred to as "The Milkshake". Its mere mention put the wind up mum (You could say it scared the crap out of her). I will try to fnd out what was in it. A drink is easier to take than a pill.
