Hi All

My Dad has Parkinson's and has had an eye infection which has not cleared up with treatment it has been three months now so we are starting to get worried.

Has any one else had a similar problem? I know that Parkinson's can cause eye problems. He has had eye drops from the doctor (two different types) but still has the eye infection.

My mom has watery red eyes daily. Occasionally she gets broken blood vessels that look like her eye is bleeding. I think this has to do with the lack of blinking she does when her medication is wearing off and she's basically frozen so when she's not blinking the tears come out instead of going under her lid. This then causes irritation and itching and then she rubs it with dirty hands and then voila - eye infection.

My moms eyes have been infected for the past six months the docs keep giving me eyedrops and we get it cleared up and turn right back around and get it back I thought it was from her wiping her eyes and her hands not being the cleanest I wipe her hands down several times a day and when shes up we wash them in the sink on good days but that was what I assumed that it came from.  I  think I will ask the doc when we go if the eye infections are coming from the PD.  I am learning something new everyday wish I would of knew about this site 5 years ago!

Well no I'm not saying PD gives eye infections. I'm saying it causes the eyes to close and then they don't blink properly so the tears do not go down the tear ducts like they should and instead flow out and they get the watery eyes. After that they may rub or sometimes in my mom's case she touches everything and then her eyes. To me it's an indirect cause of her eye infections.

Hi

Thanks for your responses I am not a doctor but I do feel PD has something to do with my Dad not being able to get rid of this eye infection it is getting worrying now as he has been taking eye drops for over 2 months now with no joy. I really hope this clears up soon otherwise I will suggest my Dad asks the doctor to refer him to an eye specialist.

See an ophthalmologist (eye disease specialist) as soon as possible. He could have glaucoma. That's high pressure within the eyeball. It will destroy the optic nerve and can cause poor eyesight or worse. I believe it is an autoimmune disease like PD. I am speaking from experience. I have problems with both eyes. Eyedrops can lower the pressure. There is aso a lazer surgery to relieve the pressure. After three years of drops I recently had the lazer surgery. Seems to be working without drops.
