My mom and dad have were in a nursing home for 6 years together before
my dad passed away in 2006. My mom is still living in a nursing home.
Its hard to say what the questions are to ask. I think observing while they
are showing you around, looking for cleanliness, numbers of staff and nurses and
the smell can tell you a lot. Even the best will have some problems. We have been in 3 now.
I think the most important thing you can do is to be sure someone is close enough to
check in frequently. I had a cousin we paid as a care giver since I did not live in the
same town as my parents. I kept in close contact with her, even got her a cell phone so
she could call me with out cost to her. At least twice my mothers life was saved because
I had Lesa. Now, I have moved mom to where I live and go over at different times to check up
and spend time with her. I like to vary my time so the staff does not know when to expect me.
It pays off, believe me. And dont be afraid to rattle some cages if you think things are not quite
right. God Bless.
