Hi Folks:I have been having this strange sensation in my fingers of numbness, but occasionally the same fingers will spasm so you can actually see them jumping around. Only lasts for a few seconds (Maybe 7-8). I remember an interview with Michael J Fox where he is talking about
this exact thing. It was his first symptom of PD. Should I worry about
this symptom and how many of you have had this happen? How do they confirm PD? Thanks D

Dowa,I would advise you to see a neurologist.Parkinson's disease is difficult to diagnose.A dx is done thru process of elimination as well as symptoms being shown. Many other diseases have similar symptoms. In addition symptoms vary greatly amoung individuals. The finger tremor you describe could indicate many neurological or muscular disorders. It could be as benign as a strained muscle pinching nerves or something more serious. You need to ask your pcp for a referral to a neurologist if your symptoms continue.Wish you the best.Ed ps Only biopsy gives 100% confirmation of pd,as is the case with alzheimers .

That would be a biopsy of the brain. The substanianigra portion for presence or absence of lewy bodies. These are abnormal protein deposits found in nerve cells that are indicative of pdif found in the substania nigra.Ed

When my symptoms started, and I didnt know what was going on, the first one was the fingers on my left hand jumping all around. My knuckles would also lock up.
My family doctor suggested that I see a neurologist, and after doing some testing, she told me I had Parkinsons.

I hang in the Fibromyalgia forum but have had twitching fingers on my left hand and a few weeks ago my thumb seems as though it wants to draw itself into my palm. It will kind of get a tad stuck there and then twitch a bit when it finally relaxes. I have overly responsive reflexes on my left side too so recently my dr sent me to the neuroligist. My daughter has MS so he had me do a brain scan which did show some lesions but that could be because of age or other things so I am going in Monday for a neck scan.
He spoke about
Parkinsons, and wants to rule out MS because of my daughters MS. I have been reading a little about
parkinsons and I certainly seem to have quite a few of the symptoms but the thing is they come and go so I doubt that it is MS or Parkinsons.
My symptoms are, besides the left hand thing, once in a while I will feel like I am going to just topple over but so far I always catch myself. On occasion I will be walking and my foot just doesn't leave the floor. I have developed a very oily forehead and dandruff I never had before. I haven't had a good nights sleep in years. I go to sleep easily most of the time but I wake up and toss and turn alll night long and when I get up in the morning I can hardly move I'm so stiff and sore. Also fro several months now I have been getting lots of muscle cramps and spasms in my toes as if my toes are trying to pull themselves off of my feet.
Most of my symptoms I have just attributed to fibromyalgia for many years but now I'm wondering if there isn't more to it on one hand, but on the other because they aren't really severe, and they aren't consistant it probably is just my fibro. EEK...what to think.

PD has many symptoms which would not seem to be related to this type of medical condition, problems with the skin and the toes being two of them. You didn't mention anxiety or panic attacks, but that is common also. When I noticed a slight tremor in the left thumb I had years of experience working with medically related stuff and thought for sure that it was a pinched nerve. about
10 minutes with the neurologist resulted in a PD diagnosis and he was absolutely correct. If you are diagnosed with PD you will have many, many questions about
what will happen and how fast. This forum will do an excellent job of answering some of those questions, but we are not doctors. Unless you happen to live in a large city you may want to go to someplace with neurologists with specialization in movement disorders. I live in the southeast and many people in this area go to the University of Alabama at Birmingham. I go to Shands hospital in Gainesville, Fl at the University of Fl. Because I have recently had dbs surgery and have not been posting for awhile I will start a thread with a brief update of my experience. Good luck and keep an eye on the forum.

Dowa. Hi. I agree. Find a good neur. dr. that will listen to you. My symptom that took me to a dr. was just a tremor in my right hand. After research, it was not my first symptom, but the one that led me to seek help. Good luck.

The very first symptom of PD is loss of smell. This can happen decades before other symptoms appear. I lost my sense of smell about
30 years before any other symptoms appeared. There is usually no connection to PD when a person first loses their sense of smell. My loss was blamed on a bad virus that I had. Just a thought.....maybe the virus started the PD..........?
