Mayo vs. MD Anderson vs. doc who does only DaVinci

Thank you to all who answered my last question.  Here is one I haven't seen here before.  When Kurt had his surgery, we chose to go with a doctor who specialized in the prostate and the DaVinci.  We had the option of going to MD Anderson and the Mayo, but felt like a young doc who specialized in the DaVinci, and not just in pca was our choice.  But, we were going to have to travel any way.  If you lived near MD or Mayo, would you still travel?  Even if you knew first hand of the results from another doc?  Thanks again!  Courtney

Hindsight I guess is always something that we do as humans.  Before choosing to have my surgery at Vanderbilt Univeristy I looked strongly at Dr. Menon in Detriot and the Mayo locations in Florida and Minnesota.  My surgeon had done over 1,000 Da Vinci's and I felt that he had plenty of experience.  The fact that he was only two hours away did not really influence my decision as I was willing to travel anywhere.  His comforting characteristic and commitment to my total recovery was what sold me.  Now 14 months later and still struggling with ED and reading the experiences of others that have had total recovery it is just natural to think if my outcome would have been better with another surgeon.  Then I think about how selfish that sounds when compared to those who are dealing with advanced PCa.

Kziz, you didn't direct your injection question to me, but I'll put my two cents in anyway. I began injections caverject last September- some pain but well worth it. I have tried everything that has been discussed on this site and highly recommend injections - it is the only thing that I have found that allows me to function about as well as before surgery and it doesn't take any special work to make it happen. I think the injections are also improving my natural function, so I don't think they hender the recovery process (you should talk to doctor about that, however). I have recent posts - trimix thread - about my experience. The only negative when I started was the cost of caverject and some minor pain envolved- Switching to Trimix improved both issues drastically. I just wish I hadn't wasted 7 or 8 months before starting. If I had a do over I would found a good compounding pharmacy about 3 months after surgery and get a 10ML vial of trimix formulated as follows; 30 mg, 1mg & 10mcg/ mL (Papaverine, Phentolamine and Alprostadil) - get some 1/2inch 33gage syringes - and go for it.  I have heard some talk about a reduced sex drive- personally I think it's natural when you can't get it up like you used to, and you have to pump it up and take pills and then hope you don't leak pee.  -  The injections changed that for me.
