I am new & could really use some advice. My husband had the surgery for postate cancer using the Da Vinci device and came home yesterday. Early this morning he started having very sharp pain lasting for five minutes at a time. I have called his doctor and he called in a prescription for a medication to stop spasims. We live out in the middle of nowhere and it's a 2 1/2 hour round trip to where we can pick it up. i don't want to leave my husband alone that long so my Daughter is driving up from town to bring it to us. But I have been reading this list and I havn't found anyone who has had such a hard time. Should I insist we return to the hospital. There dosen't appear to be any blood now in his urine and he doesn't have a fever. He has Vicodin for pain and Macrobid for infections. Please fogive any misspellings as I have had little sleep for the last 4 days.

First, welcome to the club, hate you folks have to be here. You don't say where the pain is located, so my only guess will be dependent on what I experienced. I would suspect bladder spasms. The bladder has been sliced, diced and stitched back together and bladder spasms with the catheter is a common complaint post surgery. Hopefully the meds he prescribed is for that or will help if it is spasms.... Another more unlikely cause may be gas pains from the gas they used to inflate the abdomen. If it continues or worsens, I'd call back again for further help. No sense to suffer needlessly.. sad

Welcome to the best forum on the web. I too had some sharp pains for a few days after my open RRP. I thought that perhaps the catheter was plug up with a blood clot  or something. The pain was quite sharp and lasted for maybe 1-2 minutes and then subsided again. This happen several time a day during 3-4 days after surgery and my urologist told me that they were bladder spasms. After about 4 days the pain stopped and did not return.

Hope that's all that's wrong with your husband.

Hi Newspin and welcome!!

On the day of my discharge from the hospital, my doctor prescribed an antibiotic for bladder spasm to be taken as needed. Can't remember the name of the prescription at the moment so looks like it is common for people to have bladder spasm as to the reason he prescribed them. I didn't needed them since I did not have any spasm or pain. Hope this helps

I had DeVintia on may5. My doctor sent me home with 4 perscriptions, one for pain one stool softner one antibotic and one for blatter spasams

Thanks everyone. DH took the first of the new pills 2 hours ago & he's sound asleep now. I'm so pleased. It does look like bladder spasms is the reason for the pain. I think I'm really going to need you guys for the foreseeable future. Thank you once again.

Newspin - welcome to a great site for what you need to help you through this. I found it about two weeks after my hubby's surgery and it's been such a godsend to us both . . . I only wish I'd been here sooner. . . remember to take care of yourself too!

When you have time, you can search back through pages and pages of topics in here . . the page numbers are at the top and bottom of the screen pages and you just click on each one. Many many topics are included in here.

Then if you click on "control panel" and "edit profile" you can add a signature with your husband's information and stats that will print at the bottom of your posts, if you like. Keeps us all informed.

Good luck and keep us posted. . . .this is a very helpful, caring and supportive site. . . for sure.

Welcome Newspin, you will find valuable info here, from people who have "real world experience". I have found more useful info and support in these pages than I could ever have imagined.

welcome newspin and thanks for sharing you and your husbands journey with us. There are so many facest to healing that it is hard to know exactly where the pain is coming from. PC surgery does move some things around, I would feel confident in saying that the pain will subside and his healing will begin. Please keep us posted as to how he responds to the new medications.

We do have those that have had similar issues post operitively. I was not one of them. Or at least I had a different issue. Welcome to the best place on the web for patient to patient interaction. Your husband will improve greatly in short time. be patient, but if he is too uncomfortable, see the doctor. Sometimes a simple medication will cure the spasms. You are more than welcome to stay with us, with or without the spell checker. :-) Our team is the finest group on the web and we are here to help and be helped.
