:-)  Tofranil has a side effect of urinary retention....hope it helps :>)

    Swimmom,  Do you know why or how it does it.  Do you think it would be something I should ask my Dr about?

I'd have to look in the PDF to remember but I know its been used in the past for treating bed wetting in children.
A history of difficulty urinating is one of its contraindications. I'll try to look it up to refresh my memory.

According to what I read: "Mayo Clinic" Tofranil causes the bladder muscle to relax while causing the smooth muscles at the bladder neck to contract.

Another site reported that it causes increased muscle tone in the bladder neck. It is an antidepressant which has also been used to help with bed wetting in children.

Just thought I would update everyone on the Tofranil medication that my dad started. It's been about 5 months that he's been on it and his incontinence is still about zero.

I just talked to him a little bit ago and he was going to start weaning himself off of it and see if there was any difference. He had surgery last August and started Tofranil in Dec or Jan...I really can't recall. He had pretty significant incontinence up until that point, and the week he started the drug there was an amazing difference. So was it due to natural recovery or medication, we really won't know. But whatever it was it worked.

I have kidney disease, so wondering if I would be a candidate?

He hasn't noticed any side effects....I think it says the usual...dry mouth etc..and I don't really know about contraindications??

He was just happy that "something" helped the incontinence. He had an appointment scheduled at an incontinence clinic and really felt like he didn't need to go by the
time the appointment came around. He did keep the appointment though.
