HAD A PSA OF .6  YES .6, DR SAID I COULD SELL IT IN HIS OFFICE IT WAS SO GOOD.  UPON A RECTAL EXAM HE FOUND SOMETHING, AND A BIOPSY CONFIRMED EARLY STAGE CANCE. HAVE BEEN TO PROSTATE CANCER PEOPLE AT MASS GENERAL, AND ALL SAY THEY WOULD DO "WATCHFULL WAITING" CONSIDERING MY AGE (67) AND MARGINAL HEALTH.  THEY THINK I WILL DIE OF SOMETHING ELSE BEFORE THIS. GLEASON SCORE OF 6, LESS THAN 5%.   LOGICALLY IT SOUNDS GOOD, BUT STILL HARD TO WALK AROUND WITH CANCER AND ARE NOT DOING ANYTHING about IT.  THEY SAID I WOULD ONLY BE ELIGIBLE FOR RADIATION AND SIDE AFFECTS DON'T SEEM TO GOOD.  I WANT TO FIX IT, BUT AM AFRAID I COULD RUIN THE REST OF MY LIFE WITH BAD SIDE AFFECTS.  I ALREADY HAVE URINARY PROBLEMS AND ED.  ANYONE ELSE ON "WATCHFUL WAITING"?

Tom I am not on the waiting list. But the more information you get the easier it is to understand the Drs way of thinking. Prostate cancer in general is very slow growing, an they say 1 in 5 men will get it sometime in there life. So don't fear it, there is a lot that can be done and a lot of people to talk to. I have not heard of bad side affect from radiation. Mybe a second opion would make you feel a little better. Stay with this site an keep asking the questions everyone here is in the same boat.

Your PSA is really low, which, according to research would lead one to believe that your cancer is not aggressive, and old age could get you before the cancer does. A large percentage of men who pass away in their late 70's and later have prostate cancer, which was undetected. Good Luck, you can always seek a second opinion, and make a choice that you can live with.

Educate yourself - it's amazing how much peace of mind it brings. Stick around here and read books.
My doc told me that 40% of men my age (47) were walking around with my level of PCa and had no idea. His message - don't panic. Sounds like yours is early and non aggressive. Weigh your options, get a second opinion and go from there. BTW - opinions i found did not vary much at all. They all agreed I could do watchful waiting, but eventually would need surgery because of my age. I talked to four excellent uro's. You will likely find similar consensus re: your first uro suggested.

Don't panic, do some research.  I have a website www.gleason10.com that has nothing to sell, only information to try and help others who have been diagnosed with PCa (Prostate Cancer).  It tells my story and also has several personal blogs and other websites that I found to   be informative for Cancer Patients.

I have a hard time accepting a wait and see attitude regardless of one's age.

I selected Proton Radiation at the UFPTI and am awaiting my first treatment.

If you are at Mass Gen look into proton and you must be in the Boston area, so check out the www.protonbob.com site - get Bob Marckini's email and give him a shout.  His book "You Can Beat Prostate Cancer" at Amazon.com is a good read.   Best of luck to you and keep us posted.
