Okay--this prostate thing is getting out of hand--Monday Larry (my husband)had a biopsy on his lymph node at the base of his neck as the new CT showed nodes throughout his abdomen, pelvis, lungs and neck. As I previously noted, his PSA had dropped to 12 from Lupron treatment, yet something was spreading through his body. Tuesday he had tubes inserted into his kidneys through his back as the kidneys were being blocked by the prostate tumor continuing to grow and a new tumor in the bladder. He now has one partially functioning kidney, but the doctor hopes this one will improve as it gets use to the tube. The other tube only produces small amounts of blood. Wednesday we went for the results of the biopsy and we found out he now has another very aggressive form of Neuroendocrine prostate carcinoma. The oncologist would have started chemo this week, but without at least one kidney working well, he is waiting until next week. The creatine (sp?) levels were 3.1 yesterday and 2.7 today so we are on our way. He will begin Carboplatin and Etoposide next week and receive 3 days of chemo every 3 weeks. He will also continue the Lupron and Zometa for the hormone driven pc which was also very aggressive. He is really starting to get frustrated as 4 months ago he was a very active, working man. Now with the pain meds, tubes and the idea of starting chemo, he wonders if the means justifies the ends. Does anyone know how successful chemo treatment is for this second cancer? What happened with the idea that prostate cancer is slow growing? Isn't one cancer enough to fight? Sorry for sounding discouraged, but nothing seems to be going his way. Thanks for letting me vent here.
