Zometa for bones

Hi:

I visited my oncologist tday for my first shot of Lupron and while I was there he suggested that I begin Zometa since the cancer is also in my hip.

I am wondering if anyone has had experience with this drug and its +'s and -'s Look like there are lots of side effects!

Any comments will be helpful.

Hi Jack,

My husband used Zometa for a few months, but had to stop because of other complications with his kidneys. His oncologist had also said that Zometa was important because of bone mets and I have a friend who is a rep for the Zometa company who also speaks highly of its benefits (maybe a little biased). My husband's first treatment made him feel like he had been hit by a mac truck for about a week. The next treatment he felt bad for just a few days. The doctor had said that each time you feel less side-effects. I have read that it helps the bone rejuvinate stronger and helps to slow the progression of any cancer spread to some degree. Sorry I can't give you any long term help.

I've been on it for about two years.

No real side effects, however I have them administer over 25 minutes (standard is 15),
I did this because the first treatment left me in a lot of pain. I've had no issues since

My husband has no detectable bone mets but Zometa was ordered every six months due to bone density issues after a year and a half of hormone therapy.  He had the first infusion a few weeks ago.  He said he felt some slight aches and pains a few days after but no real side effects.  The clinic did mention they give the first infusion at a slower rate which is said to help.

My other half had his first Zometa IV the 25th of August. He had a severe allergic reaction to the medication which caused him to have every side effect with 10 times the aching, fever, hive type bumps, nausea, etc. I had to rush him to doctor so they could prescribe a pain medication. That didn't help. He had dry heaves for almost 24 hours. A second trip to doctor and he was administered 1000 units of Saline Solution and a nausea medication and prescribed a different pain medication. He is just now able to get around and eat a little better. They said this happens sometimes but rarely.

He will be 72 in a few weeks.
PSA was reading 17.0
bone mets in shoulder, ribs, and lower back -
Has been on Zolodex for about a year
Casodex for 2 months.
