I'm having surgery tomorrow. Been fasting all day and getting ready to give myself an enema. Yee haa.
Any advice for tomorrow from anyone online? I'm not really worried, right now I'm just hungry and have a
headache from not eating, and darn I've gotta go give myself this enema. But I'm pysched to get this cancer out
of me.

Sorry to hear you have to go through this at your age, you are fortunate that they caught it when they did. Looking back on my experience the surgery wasn't that bad, and they gradually increase the food and by dinner time I was back to regular food. They even had me up walking before 9:00 PM. I was home the next day by noon. You should not have any problems, just keep everything clean.

Sorry to hear you got this at such a young age.  I drink a clear protein drink that I got at GNC vitamin store, you might try that, it is clear liquid and it really helps!

Jon, good luck to you and may your surgeon have the greatest possible skill. Couldnt imagine giving myself the enema, lol, but I am married to a nurse. Due to a mix up, I had to stop eating on a Thursday morning, had my operation mid afternoon on Friday, and the first food I saw was Saturday morning and it was lousy broth! That steamed my clams at the time, so I feel for you.

We will be looking for you on the other side!

My first post...Good luck Brother...with those low numbers you should do just fine...right now it really sucks... But the journey will get better...Being here will get you alot of info. and great support...

Good luck on the surgery ,it isnt as bad aas your mind will wan to make it,everyone is different, the cath is a piece of cake ,and no it doesnt hurt when removed,go to a GOOD hospital and it will make ALL the difference..............dirt

Hi John,

I would just like to wish you the best of luck for tomorrow. With your good numbers (except for your young age) you should have a very good prospect of a complete cure. I'm sure that before you know it you'll be back to your old self again minus the cancer.

John-by now you are through surgery. It is all downhill from here. It was worse to prepare for it than to begin to heal from it. Looking forward to hearing from you in a couple of days.

am home now little sore in stomach and catheter is wierd but happy to be done ill type more soon thanks for all of the support

Welcome back Jon!! Was just thinking about you today, and wondering if you were back home. Congrats for being on the other side now. On the catheter, after just getting off of over 2 months on them, ask any question you want! Hope the soreness eases soon, it should.

Jon, welcome home. Nows the opportunity to flush out your system of the drug residue and surgical debris left behind. Drink water, plenty of it. The only time you'll be able to pee without a trip to the bathroom since infancy for most of us. Here's a link to some after care info, specifically catheter care:

You made it home! Welcome back. James is right, drink plenty of water and don't forget the stool softeners. I've even found out that mineral oil has a flavor...the flavor of smoothing things along.

hope you have a uneventful and painless recovery Jon.  stay away from coffee and sodas while you have the catheter, these could irritate the bladder.  water and juice are best for now.

JonH - Tips on catheter: I had mine in for 16 days (long for some, short for others). They should have given you some antibiotic cream to put on it - use it 3 times a day and it will decrease discomfort. When it feels uncomfortable or stings that usually means it has twisted somewhat - take off your pants and leg strap and let it hang free for a second to get twists out.

Don't be afraid to change out large bad and small bad and use plug to take a shower - it was a short time of freedom for me while in the shower.

But most of all keep in mind it seems like an eternity but it is not and we have all survived and you will too.

Before I had mine removed several people told me it hurt like hell for a second upon removal. But mine did not hurt at all and what a relief to get rid of it!

When I had my 5th catheter removed last Monday, after 66 days on the catheters, I was really worried it would hurt. My dr., real sensitive to my pain level, had me stand up, and I said why, he said that with the very large diameter catethers like he had me on, the gravity helps. Once he deflated the balloon, it just slid out in easy pull. A little bit of pressure, but no pain. None of the other 4 hurt coming out, all the nurses were pretty sensitive about that.
