Well, tommorow is Valentine's day, but also 3 months to the day I had my
open surgery. Seems much longer. Surgically, I feel very healed for this point. I am doing well so far with the incontinence thing and remarkedly well on the ED front. I have been out of work since the end of July, not counting some consulting work, etc. in between. There's only so much I can fix around the house, and clean house and cook for the working wife. So today, I started doing volunteer work at a combination nursing home/rehab center. My motives aren't entirely pure, as a former very busy businessman (CFO), I really go crazy without having anything meaningful to do while looking for work.
I enjoyed it today, helped wheel a lot of wheelchair people about, helped with the lunches, played yatzee (a new one to me), and assisted where needed. And yes, to do this, I had to be drug tested, TB tests, criminal background check, etc. just to work for free.
What does this have to do with PC? Sometimes, the best way to help yourself, is to help someone else. From making the rounds today, despite what I have been through with PC and other medical ailments, there are so many people so much worse shape than I. So many people suffering in unspeakable pain and suffering despite medical help, so many with families that don't even care enough to visit their own parents, etc.
It made me feel lousy for even complaning once about my own situation. I plan to do this several times a week as I continue to look for employment. It may help out the others there, but it certainly helps me as much. Just thought I would share this.
