Update on Husband

My husband just called after seeing his urologist (had the PSA test earlier this week and results were zero). Urologist was very pleased that the PSA remains at zero 11 months after surgery. He was a bit concerned because there was a miniscule invasion into the capsule very close to the outer edge. However, the surgeon knew from the biopsy that one of the tumors was very close to the edge and had decided to cut a wider margin than he needed to during the surgery. The urologist - who is a sweetheart - said that he is very happy with the PSA results because the first year is so critical.

For the second year, my husband will continue with a PSA test every 3 months and a visit with the urologist every 6 months. FYI: His surgical pathology staged him at T3a (with clean margins and SV) so the urologist has chosen to continue frequent PSA tests to stay on top of things.

The urologist prescribed Vesicare because my husband still experiences frequent urges to pee. He has no blockage - just needs to urinate frequently. The doctor gave him a 2 week supply of Veiscare (5 mg.) and said to let him know how it works after 2 weeks. My husband also asked whether a rectal exam is needed and the doctor said "no" - I think that made by hubby happy!

I forgot to mention that the doctor prescribed Viagra 2 to 3 times a week to see if we can get junior to pay attention!

My pathology staging is exactly as your husband's. In my case, my surgeon also went wide on the left side because the cancer was close to the edge. I hope I get the same zeroes that your husband is getting. Good luck to him and to you.

Greetings, Sephie.  I have a question that maybe you can help me with.  One of the issues that we have faced is the urge to urinate - particularly at night.  I have had good control right from the first but continue to have to get up 2 or 3 times at night to go.  My doc prescribed Detrol LA which I have been on for about 4 months.  I still have to get up at night - it may have helped a little but not to the extent I had hoped. 

Is the Vesicare working and helpful?  He may not have been on it long enough to know yet but I'd be interested in your input once you have some experience with it.  Thanks.  David
