Could someone please tell me how long it usually takes to get the pathology results after surgery?

I'm not sure how quickly the lab sends the result back to the surgeon. My appointment with the doctor was 8 days after the surgery but he could have had the results sooner than that.

My dad had surgery on the 30th of August and received a call from his surgeon the following week on Friday. I believe he had told us 5-7 days.

It seems pretty much the norm to discuss the path report after surgery when the catheter is removed. Probably lets the doctor stay focused with your care, rather than to call you and then have to go over it again when he sees you. I am sure they won't mind giving you the results earlier if available if you give them a call.

On my path report...it was read by two separate pathologists and they had to agree before giving the results to my surgeon. I don't know if that is standard policy or not, but that is what they did with mine. The date of the report was 6 days after surgery and my followup appointment was 14 days. So your surgeon may already have a copy.

Same here LV-TX, got the pathology report the same day the catheter was removed. about 7 days after surgery.

Hey don't forget to also ask for the Surgeon's Report -- It is all the fascinating stuff that your never got to experience when you were out like a light. (Yes you can hardly understand any of it but is still a neat thing to have).

(If anyone wants to know what is in the report maybe I can transcribe some of it ..)

Hi Dana, We were told the results a little earlier than most here. My husband had surgery at 8am on a Tuesday,  and at 9pm on Wednesday when Surgeon went to ward on day 2,  he told my husband the complete path report findings which he already had with him.  4 days later we got a copy when the catheter was removed. We asked to know the post op pathology as soon as it was available but did not expect it quite so early. Surgeon said initially about 4 days to know results but for us it was about 36 hours after surgery.

I had surgery on Tuesday AM and got the results on Thursday just before I was discharged. But my surgeon was checking with the pathologist every day as he was concerned that the cancer had escaped from my prostate. But it was contained and no worry.

I got my result from my doctor after I went to remove the cat (10 days after surgery) but I think that the result was received within a week after surgery.
