I am looking to dialog about side effects of taking Lupron in advance of beginning proton therapy. I have back and torso pains as well as groin discomfort not to mentin the hot flashes which are't bad at all ... but I am having to take increasing doses of pain medication for this pain. My questions have to do with is this normal. Have others experienced this? Thanks in advance for any information you might wish to post.

It would be helpful if you included your stats as that would gives us more information about the extent of your PC.
If you are just trying to shrink your prostate or delay the PC while you await proton treatments then Casodex and Proscar will do the job with out the side affects of Lupron. If your PC is more severe then Lupron or Zoledex is warrented. Also you might ask your doctor about high dose Casodex instead of Lupron.

I agree with John,
Neo-Adjuvant HT is used in suspected advance cases. What was your diagnosis biopsy stats...?

Hi ... thank for replys ... my PSA is 8.5 and gleason 9 ... radiation doc says lupron but no casodex ... I am mainly interested in those who have done this treatment prior to proton ... to find out if these side effects are normal or ??? ... thanks for the

 info ... I read that more extreme cases take both Lupron and Casodex so was happy that he just said Lupron ... but maybe this feeling is not justified ... anybody else care to comment ... I'm going to Loma Linda and have total confidence in everyone there so

 far ... they are super and have great attutudes which sort of rubs off ... plus great support groups ... and I love the proton BOB site ... but they don't have a forum there yet ... GBY&PTL ... db

How old are you?

So far the protocol sounds correct for the typical 64 year old and above at Dx.

Did Lupron a couple of years ago have now started Zoladex pre IMRT. Hot flashes the worst offsetting with Bioflavanoids Quercitin and Hisperitin helping somewhat.. It seems caffeine and alcohol make hot flashes worse.

Hello Songwrangler,

Prior to beginning my IMRT treatment I was put on lupron and casodex. The casodex was used to prevent a tumor "flare". As I understood it the "flare" could manifest as lower back and hip pain. The casodex was only for a month but the lupron is for two years.

I have had the usual SE's from the lupron but have adjusted.  I did have some muscle pain in my upper legs but began taking vitamin D and calcium. Also b12. Pain cleared up rapidly with the daily dose. I do not know if there is a cause and effect but it sure seemed to be one to me.

Hi Songwrangler,

I have had one injection of Lupron, 30 Mg with only hot flashes for SE's. If you haven't advised your docs of the pain, you might want to consider it. Each of us responds differently to the PC drugs. My radiation oncologist rapped me twice in the middle of my back. When I asked why, he said that I would have jumped up in pain if the cancer had spread to my back. I sincerely hope that your pain is from the Lupron so that another drug or combination can be substituted. Also, I wish you the best with the proton therapy.

I would bet that you'll find a few people who did hormone therapy followed by proton radiation there.
