Drinking water before IMRT

I have to drik 32 oz of water 1 hour before every IMRT session. On monday the CT scan had to be aborted because I had to pee so bad I couldn't hold it any more. They had to start over. I'm going for my frist session today at 2pm and would like to know any tricks that guys have used to hold urination while undergoing IMRT.

No tips here but I was never asked to do that and in fact I emptied my bladder before each session but I was in a salvage setting.

John, I found it best to urinate soon after you drink the water. That way your bladder will be empty when the water gets there. Then, then, . . . .practice HOLDING IT!!!!

32oz, might be too much for you. Try a smaller amount but make it consistent. They want the bladder full, not ready to explode. Some folks can't drink that much, especially after surgery, and hold it. You can practice at home with what amount you can hold and for how long. Again, it is important to be consistent.

For me it was a double cruelty joke. First, I had undergone RRP a couple months before IMRT, and we all know the #1 side effect is incontinence. So telling an incontinent man to drink alot of water and hold it was an interesting challenge. A couple times I barely made it off the table before Mother Nature demanded relief. Plus I am a bit claustrophobic, so asking me to remain perfectly still for ten minutes was a lot of fun, too. But heck, if I can do it, anyone can. I agree with Tony, 32 oz. seems a bit much. Hi, I only had to drink 250ml and hold it 1 hour before my radiation, it was not too bad.... unless they were running behind!! by the way mine was salvage.

John,

I would empty my bladder one hour before my treatment and then drink a 20 oz. bottle of water. I would bring a bottle with me, if there was a delay and I was uncomfortable I would partially empty my bladder and then drink more water.

I believe by filling the bladder it moves the colon away from all the action. I think they also want the anatomy to be somewhat consistent day to day.

I basically adopted the same procedure as Ken. If my time was delayed and I was not able to hold it anymore, I would partially empty my bladder and maybe drink a little more water. By the last trimester of my 44 day treatment regimen, I got pretty good at it.
