Has anyone out there had trouble with penile pain and burning.  As you can see from my signature I had radiation treatment and am currently on lupron and casodex.  lately have had problems with penile ache and burning.  I have had the burning before and had a urinary test for infection, was clear.  Just wondering if anyone has had the same problems.  I have been drinking cranberry juice and I think it's helping.  Any advise or ways to deal with this?

Brenda, the lady who removed my catheter, said if I had any pain/burning to mix half a teaspoon of baking soda in half a glass of water and drink it down. I did have some burning/pain yesterday, and so I drank the potion with excellent results, although I must warn you that while it goes down easy afterwards your mouth tastes much like a chicken barn smells. But, another glass of water cured that. And, wonder of wonders, it worked.

When they yanked the cath out I was sure my penis had been riped off and would be dangling from the end of the plastic tube the nurse yanked out and held in the air. It really hurt. The burning/ pain persisted after that. That was last year but if I had the post above I would have sure given it a try.

Whoa wd40, that's awful. My experience was very different. Frankly less stressful than getting my teeth cleaned. Less discomfort, and if lasted only a couple of seconds. No big deal. I don't know if I was lucky, or if you had an unskilled person on the yanking end. Brenda who took mine out, told me she'd been yanking catheters for 34 years and never had a complaint. If you ever have to have another catheter let me know when it's time to take it out and I'll introduce you to Brenda.

I experienced no pain when my catheter was removed, just a strange sensation bordering on mild discomfort. But I don't recall it being "yanked" out - a more gentle approach was taken by my nurse!

Problems can arise when the balloon hasn't deflated properly and, under those circumstances, "yanking" would be ill advised.

I have had two experiences with catheter removal. My first was after my TURP procedure. The catheter removal was the most painfull thing I had ever experienced. Then after my RRP two weeks later my catheter was removed. It hurt some but it lasted only a minute or so. It wasn't no ways as bad as my first removal. I guess there are different factors that make the difference.

I had 5 catheters removed over the period of 63 days, none of them hurt, none of them were yanked out, in fact, the various nurses involved seemed very sensitive to the task, and knew that I was scared to death. On my very last cath, my dr/surgeon removed it in a different manner, he had me stand up. He release the fluid in the balloon, and without him touching a thing, the nasty cath just dropped out from between my legs like a snake to the floor below. Gravity did the trick.

The only technical problem I ever heard from talking to the nurses, was they have to allow a moment or two after the balloon is deflated before they start the cath removal. If it is not fully deflated, of course it would meet resistence and cause pain.

Sorry you had to experience such pain.

PS

As far as the burning part urinating, has your doctor have to tried pyridium, a presecription low cost med? My only experience with burning was instantly cured after being on it for a day or two.

Hi kak,

I would recommend pyridium as a pretty sure cure but if the baking soda in a half glass of water works, that would be preferable. Pyridium makes your urine turn orange and will stain anything it touches. It will also discolor contact lens if you wear them.
