General David Petraeus Treated For PC

CNN was just reporting that General David Betrayeus was dx. with PC in February, early state, and had just completed 2 months of radiation treatment. Will have to see if more details follow this storyAge:

Post Surgery PSA: 2/09 .05,5/09 .1, 6/09 .11. 8/09 .16
Latest: 7/09 met 2 rad. oncl, 7/09 cath #6 - blockage, 8/9 2nd corr surgery, 8/9 cath #7 - out 38 days, 9/14/9 - met 3rd rad. oncl.agree to start radiation, mapping on 9/21/9, 9/24 - mtg with uro/surg, 9/29- pre-op, 10/1 - 3rd corr. surgery - suprapubic cath/hard dialation, 10/5 - first treatment IMRT.

Yes, the story is shown below.  Also, just to be accurate, the correct spelling of his name is "Petraeus".  The "Betrayus" mispelling was one that was used by some during the Iraq war...in a mis-guided way, IMHO.

Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in February and has since undergone two months of radiation treatment.

Petraeus, 56, was diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer, which was not publicly disclosed at the time because Petraeus and his family regarded his illness as "a personal matter" that "did not interfere with the performance of his duties," said his spokesman, Col. Erik Gunhus. President Obama and top members of his administration were informed, he said.

As commander of a region running through the Middle East and across Central Asia, Petraeus did make at least one overseas trip during his treatment.

I fixed it...It's been a busy year with celebs and PCa...

Note: The General had an parachuting accident and his pelvic bone was damaged and put back together with plates and screws. According to the AP this is why he selected radiation...

Not to get really off the subject but I just had to add this in....how many ways is Quadaffi spelled???? (no this is not a quiz...nor should you feel that you should answer it but here goes:

That makes at least 3 generals diagnosed in recent years: Petraeus, Colin Powelll and Norman Schwarzkopf.

We don’t like to have anyone join this club, generals included, but I think that any publicity about the prevalence of PC is good. If a tough old solder like him could get it…


I note that the press release said: “the treatment was successful.” A true statement but one that obscures the years of testing that lie ahead for the general. Well, perhaps that is too much education for the public.

I didn't like the "treatment was successful" part in particular. Are they claiming a 100% cancer cure claim, or in the world of media releases, does it simply mean he completed his radiation treatment completely? Two ways to read that.

I presume that his post-treatment PSA's were within expected values, which is all anyone can hope for at this stage. But I do agree that it invites people to read "cured" where a better view would be waiting (and worrying)

I hope the General does well on his journey, just like I hope the rest of us will do well also.  This disease shows no concern as to who you are or what you do.
