I have read alot of things that state that prostate cancer is found in mostly older men, and it is rare for men under the age of 45 to be diognosed with it. This is not the case with myself and my brother in law, as i was diognosed at 45, and he was at 40. My elevated psa was discoved kind of acidently at a blood screening clinic, and so far I think I'm doing ok, only time will tell. My brother in law had been having some prostate problems when they discovered it. He have open surgery about four and a half years ago, and is maintaining a psa of .01. There is no history of prostate cancer in either of our families. There are alot of stats out there for the older age groups, but I have found nothing for the 45 and younger group. Also do the stats vary by regions?

Hello Brad, and welcome to HW. Glad you found us. Yes, you and your brother in law are on the young side. We have several men in their 40s when they got their PC dx. We have lots of men in their 50s like me, and 60s as well as some older gents.

Glad your brother in law is doing so well after more than 4 years. I had open surgery too, but less than a year ago, but I am undergoing salvage radiation treatments currently, because the cancer is still there.

See your surgery is real recent, less than a month ago. I hope your healing and recovery is going well.

There is a good group of men and women here that will welcome you too. Please keep us posted.

First of all, your path report looks pretty good and so the odds are very much in favor of your being cured.

The biggest "regional difference" in PC is that those living in countries like China have a lower incidence of PC -- this leads to speculation that a diet low in red meat and animal fat and high in soy protein may reduce PC risk. Many of the people here have modified their diets in this direction, but this is more hopeful than proven science.

We welcome you here as you work on your recovery from surgery. There are issues of incontinence and ED that many of us have to address and this is a place that we discuss such things without restraint. Take advantage of this site as you feel the need -- we are here for you

Welcome, I was 46 when the whole diagnostic process began. I feel blessed, cause on the day of my first urologist appointment, the doctor was late getting into my room. He apologized and said he had to break the news to a 46 year old man that he had advance PCa. I've never forgotten that guy and remind myself how lucky I was to have a good GP who did a PSA every year at my physical starting at 40.

Welcome aboard Brad. We are on the same timeline as my Da Vinci surgery was 09/29/2009. Hopefully you are progressing and healing well. This is the right place to be for support and sharing experiences. Looking forward to hearing from you in the days ahead.

I,m sorry to hear about the gentleman in your reply. Maybe testing should be pushed at a earlier age. I knowI'm a huge believer in doing so now. I was one that you know health, in fairly good shape,and never been sick in my life, that even with my brother in law having it, I didn't pay attention.  In fact when I went to the blood screen clinic they asked me if I wanted a psa test, I had to ask them what it was. Where would I be 2,3,4, Years from now. The fifteen dollars was well spent.

First of all there has been study after study proving and dis-proving that prostate cancer is not more aggressive in younger men.  So, who knows.  I know a guy who is 26 years out from seed implants. 

What was your Gleason score?

3+3=6

3+4=7

4+3=7

Any teritary score mentioned on your post-op pathology.

my gleason score is a 3+4, and the gleason tertiary states none. I don't know if that means there is'nt any or it was not included in the report.

Hello Brad.

Glad to hear the good news about your procedure. I'm at 14 months out and I'm basically back to pre-surgical normal.

I've read there is one positive about being dx'd at a young age, they say younger men bounce back more readily from the surgery. So, far I can attest to that.

I wish you well in your journey and here's wishing PC will be just a little bump in your life's journey.

You can see from my signature that I was about your age at diagnosis and have had a very good recovery, so I hope you see that a good outcome is possible. I discovered after tracking my PSA over a few years with my urologist that there were different norm tables for younger guys. I wish I could find the link - maybe a Google search can turn something up for you. I was very upset at my urologist for waiting too long to act because he seemed to be measuring my PSA against the norm for the total population, which is of course skewed for the older profile of the typical PCA patient. I felt particularly cheated at getting it so young and just about poked out the eyes of a doctor's receptionist when I was on my find-the-best-surgeon tour who announced loudly to the whole waiting room of PC sufferers how great it was to have a young patient!

Face down any anger at being diagnosed young and remind yourself that you will have a better recovery and hopefully less chance of ongoing effects to your "quality of life" because of your age.

I am now more than 2 years post-op and here in Germany we have (next to the usual 3 monthly PSA tests) a big annual post-cancer check. This Friday I go in for the CT scan, bone scan and a variety of other whizbang things which should hopefully show that I still have no recurrance. I will always get nervous about this, but look forward to another clean bill of health.

Hi Andrew

Looks like  our pc was remarkably the same. From age to the margins. But you have a couple of years on me, and I'm a beginner. It would be really nice if there was not anybody here to post anything but in realality here we all are, and it is comforting to know there are people here like myself.

Wow I can't believe that receptionist did such a thing. Like you really wanted to be there as it was, and she treated it as you had won some kind of contest, or you came there just to brighten up her day.

I don't believe that here we do a yearly mri, or bone scan after  surgery, but as I said I'm a beginner. Best of luck Friday on the tests,our prayer are with you. Just one more thing I just thought of, I think this one of the few things you can score a 0 on and be a winner.
