Hi Everyone,

Bill got the latest result- now .3, was .2 three months ago. I calculated the doubling time as 6 months. I'm very concerned about the increase, although relieved it's not worse. The doctor told him it wasn't cause for concern. I'm confused. Do you think the doctor is just trying to make him not worry? He's supposed to be scheduled for radiation any day now.

First of all "scheduled for radiation" tells us that you have a doctor who is on top of your husband's situation.

I wouldn't put too much faith in the "doubling period" at this point. Think about it: If your doc is using a test which is accurate only to the nearest 1/10th then a report of 0.2 could mean that a more accurate test could have given a reading between 0.16 and 0.24 they both round to 0.2. Similarly a 0.3 could be from 0.26 to 0.34. So it is possible that your husband's raise was from 0.24 to 0.26! This may give you a hint why your doctor is not all that concerned. Remember, he is considering the pathology in addition to the PSA and is working from a lot of experience.

This PC is still very beatable, we will keep you and your husband in our hearts and prayers.

Hi Dana, I know from nothing on what the doctor may be thinking, but taking a guess, I'd say his message was .3 or .2 makes no nevermind. The radiation is going to blast it to the stars. End of story.

It will be interesting to see what others have to say.

Dana, glad to know that your husband Bill must be getting ready for salvage radiation, that is what I am in the middle of myself.

If my doctor told me that a post rise of psa like you posted was nothing to be concerned about, I would be all over my doctor, but hey, thats just me. If he is about to start radiation, the final number will be inmaterial after the radiation.

Dana...I assume from your path report the doctor had already planned on adjunctive radiation therapy anyway. I wouldn't get too worked up over the PSA velocity at this point and just proceed forward with starting the adjunctive treatment as soon as your doctor recommends. What you are seeing now will change considerably after the radiation treatment.

Dana, just want to clarify that your SO's PSA is currently .3 as your signature states it is .03 (assuming it's a misplaced decimal).

I agree with Sheldon ... since your SO will (or has) begun RT, a PSA of 0.2 vs. 0.3 is moot. And the picture will change considerably once he has completed RT.

First, Dana, please do keep us posted --- I'll be watching for updates. I'm sure this is going to turn out A-okay.

Second, Sophie, your post saying, in part, "I agree with Sheldon ...." --- I'm going to print it off and put it up beside my desk. Not often anyone agrees with me. Even those here at work whose paychecks I sign delight in not agreeing with me. I'd fire the lot, but they keep turning out to be right, which makes it difficult.

Hi Dana,


I think the pathology report meant that the follow up radiotherapy was going to happen anyway.



With Bill having had the operation in May I think you will find that he has simply been given 6 months to recover a bit from that before having the radiotherapy, that was about how much rest they gave a friend of mine after his op.
