Kidney Infection Post Prostatectomy

Hi,

Thank you very much to everyone who responded to my last posting about my Dad getting an infection one week after his catheter came out post prostate surgery. I really appreciate it!!

It turned out my Dad had a kidney infection and the bacteria was E. Coli. He was put on an IV of antibiotics and stayed in the hospital for about four days. He is now home and has been told he needs to take the antibiotics for the next month.

I was wondering if anyone else got a kidney infection after their prostatectomy...what antibiotics were you put on...how long were you on the drugs? Did you get any recurrent kidney infections?

He also has WBC, blood and protein present in his urine after taking the drugs for over a week..has anyone else had experience with this?

It is disappointing, scary and frustrating that he is having to go through this after the surgery. I wish he could just heal now and get stronger.

Any time someone has a catheter, he/she is susceptible to a bladder or kidney infection. Fortunately in today's world of anti-biotics, it is a fairly low risk side effect. There is such a wide range of drugs, that it depends on the doctors preference.

WBC or white blood cells are present in an infection as the body is fighting it. The RBC are part of blood, which is usually present for a time after a prostatectomy. The protiens can result from the kidney nit functioning as well because of the infection.

Overall, I would say this will be fine. He should recover easily and be able to continue to deal the other side effects of surgery. How is his continence. That is the next big hurdle to conquer.

It sounds like your father is following the same course of treatment that my husband did for his klebsiella infection. E. Coli and klebsiella are the two most common bacteria found in UTI's. My husband made a full recovery and I expect your father will also.
