stricture bladder neck surgery yesterday

I had my first and I hope only a stricture surgery of the bladder neck yesterday( 15 months after my RP). I had placed a few posts before asking about others who had this surgery. I had to have a spinal as there`s a possibility that I have sleep apnea (not confirmed only by my wife).

In the last 36 hours since my surgery I have found this be very painful. I have taken tylenol 3 with codeine , but find the lower abdominal area very sore even with taking it, and am still having difficulty urinating with catheter in (lots of pressure). My dr says catheter to be in for 10 days for recovery.
Have any others had same kind of pain and discomfort after this type of surgery

Fred, absolustely yes.

I had my first stricture surgery 60 days after my main surgery, and the cath was left in for about 10 days. I was very sore most of the time while healing, passed blood and debris, and required low dose pain meds most of the time. The first time it was done with a scalpel through the scope.

My second one was done under emergency conditions, when I scarred completely closed, about 6 months after the first one. The doctor had to do a hard dialation of my bladder neck, and due to circumstances, no sedation was done. One of the most painful events in my life. Was on a cath for 2 weeks after that I believe, again, lots of pain and debris passing through.

My third one was one with a laser through the scope, while I was put under. Cath was in for about a week, perhaps a bit longer, less debris, less pain, but still not real comfortable during that time.

I hope your pain and discomfort eases soon, I know this is not a fun time for you. Make sure you feel pretty healed up and less sore before the dr. pulls the catheter, or else you may end up having another one put right back in, which is no fun while you are awake. Been there done that twice too.

It is hard to judge another's pain, but a good rule is that if it doesn't seem right, call your doctor. Yes, even on a Sunday. As others have said, the trouble urinating may be clots that will pass but it could be something that will get worse. Consider that straining to pee can put undue pressure on your recent surgery. Make your call and then let the doctor make his.

If the cath is getting plugged, then they can easily remedy it by flushing the cath to clear the opening. Almost had to do that a couple of months ago or so, but as I was in the drs office, it resolved itself. Since then, he gave us an emergency irragation kit, since my wife is a nurse she knows how to do it. So far, havent had to break the seals on that box.

Your uro will have someone on call, even on a Sunday. So don't hesitate to call if it doesnt resolve soon. Good luck again.

Fred, I don't post here often. I have posted to David in the past. Approximately 6 weeks afte my robotic surgery I developed a stricture/blockage in the bladder neck area. Had surgery after not peeing for 12 hours to open up. After cath was removed went 2 weeks happened again. This time had hard dilation in the ER (Dave know how horrible) will never allow this again. Had 4 more times that blockage from scarring ocurred with follow up surgeries along with 2 different times suprapubic caths. David they tried to change the first one out and it closed off so fast they couldn't get the other one in. The second SP was right before I was operated on by a Urology Specialist who has written books on this and is using me in one of his studies. I digress, after a year and 5 surgeries for blockages from scarring I am now 15 months status post all that mess. Like David has said in earlier posts it was nothing my origina surgeon did. The Uro Specialist who finally fixed me said around 5% can have this complication post surgery. Why was it me, only God knows. On top of all this I was born without legs and dealing with the caths was a royal pain in the a**. Life is back to normal except for the ED, my next visit with the Uro Specialist is in March and I will be talking to him about the injections. Kelly

Wow, you are quite the trooper Kelly. You have quite a testimony there yourself. I hope you continue to heal and not have to deal anymore with strictures and blockages. I know how terrible it is for the men that have long term and ongoing incontinence, think most of us have had at least a taste of that. But unless one goes through a bad stricture episode, its hard to express the fear and sheer pain one can encounter. Good luck, my friend.

That is an incredible story. You are a brave individual as from what has been said in the earlier post. I certainly hope that this is the only surgery I will need. my problem seems to be when I stand or try to sit up and lean forward the pressure and pain to urinate is instant and excruating and it feels if the urine can`t get out. Its a similar pain I had before my surgery only stronger.I don`t think the catheter is plugged as there is urine seems to be going into the bag. I have taken tylenol 3 and buscapan but doesn`t seem to help. I`m awaiting a call from my dr.

just had scar tissue removed today at the hospital. after 4 months of not being able to p, i sang hallulah in the bathroom as the nurse came busting in wanting to know if i was alright thinking i had fallen down from the pain meds they had given me after the surgery. i am home now and have no discomfort. after the meds wear off i will see then. some blood still comes out but clears before i finish. my stricture was one inch from the pelvic floor muscle and the doc said it should not cause any problems with incontince. i can build good presure with out any leaking. maybe i will not experience any leaking problems for i dont have any now. tomorrow i will see for sure. i hope this problem of being plugedup is solved. i may even change my name soon.   neil

sorry i missed your last phone call. so glad you made it through your procedure, hope you heal quickly from that and with little pain as possible. you may pass some blood and debris for a few days, that would be very normal. been thinking of you there.

hello everyone been up since 3 oclock drinking soda, milk and cookies, cooked my wife breakfast before she left to go to work, and enjoying the new sprouting fountain. i can p again! im am very happy for myself. guys, with the stricture problems, i know what your going through. as im hopfuly over this problem, i will be thinking of yall and wishing you can resolve your problem also. its a tough ordeal . david i will call you back tonight.  neil
