We’ve all felt this; George Karl said it

On ESPN’s SportsCenter this morning, I heard George Karl put into words a thought that I recall, and that probably all of us recall, and it serves as a reminder to us as we continue to counsel other newcomers.

“I still wake up and say ... 'I have cancer.' I wake up in the morning and, 'Oh, my God.' “

Remember that feeling? 

He went on to say

“Cancer is a ***** to have. I don't care if it's a curable one or an uncurable one. There are not guaranteed contracts in this gig.”

Coach Karl, who I still remember will from his college days as a Tar Heel basketball player, announced that he has a throat and neck cancer which requires immediate treatment—combined radiation & chemo began yesterday.  Karl had prostate surgery in 2005.

I doubt the feeling ever goes away. I remember the first few months, cancer was ALL I thought about. Every waking moment (and lots of asleep moments too). After surgery it got better, esp after my first zero. A few weeks ago I told my wife one night that I'd only thought about PCa a couple of times that day, so must mean I was making progress! But with next psa test looming next week, struggling to keep the "I've got cancer" fears at bay.
