I had my catheter removed Monday, and since then I have noticed redness around the urethra where it exits my penis. I kept the area well lubricated with neosporin while the catheter was in. Penis feels somewhat sore too. Just wondering if this redness is a result of the catheter being in for two weeks and then being yanked out? Anybody else have the same problem after catheter removal. I was on antibiotics up to the day the catheter was removed, so it's hard to believe I have an infection. At least the swelling in my scrotum is subsiding.

Was the cath in since Feb 8th? Odds are what your seeing is normal. If it starts to look worse - seek medical treatment.
I had mine in for five weeks and was on antibiotocs almost the whole time.

The antibiotics they put me on for post-surgery were for potential infection of the surgical area. I did quite a bit of research on those when the UTIs started, and discovered that the best for major internal potential problems do nothing for the urinary tract, so had to get a second type.
But yes, I also had a lot of irritation in the several days after the cath was removed (redness, not painful), and then 3 different bouts of infection over two months following that. A UTI will put you on your knees when you pee, so I suspect you'll be calling the doc first, posting later if that's the case.

I had the same thing and believe it was due to the catheter being in for 9 days. I continued to use a topical antibiotic for 5-days post removal and believe all the redness and irritation was gone by 10-days post removal. +1 to what 142 stated about
a UTI - you'll know if you have one - it gets your attention.

Not sure if it might be something else, I have been on continuous catheters for almost 5 full months now, having them changed out 4-6 week intervals for hygeine purpose, never had any soreness or redness from any of them. I think it would be worth leting my doctor know.

I didn't have anything to add to this topic until I read David's reply.
Yes, by all means, if anything doesn't seem right call your doctor. He wants you to have the best possible recovery but he can't if he doesn't know what is going on.

Hi Sunbird,
I had my catheter in from Feb. 8th to Feb. 18th of this year. My penis was also red and irritated during and after the catheter removal. The redness cleared in about
3 days after the removal.
One thing to note is that many people are allergic to neosporin. (I know I am.) The HMO I belong to no longer sells triple antibiotic ointment in their pharmacies due to a large number of people complaining about
their reaction to neosporin.
If you are still using an ointment, you might want to switch to a double antibiotic ointment with just Bactracin Zinc and Polymyxin B Sulfate.
I hope it clears up for you soon.
Robin
