even though this was my 5th corrective surgery, i don't know if i am going to have an incontinence problem or not. the last time i peed on my own, was September 30th of last year, so I don't know if there will be an issue or not. Surgeon has warned from the very start, that every time he has to go up there and open me up, there is always a risk of incontinence where there was none before. So it makes me nervous thinking about that, as I was 100% dry prior to the install of the SP catheter

Hope your path is improving David. Was wondering, when they install the sp cath where and how does it go in and stay in the bladder? Tim

Tim, the SP has to be surgically installed. THey enter the side of the bladder, up high in it, through the stomach wall. The cath tube (nothing special about the SP catheter itself, except it doesnt need to be as long as a foley) exits in my case, about one inch below, and to the left of my belly button. Once it exits, it looks like and works like any other catheter. When I had it installed on Oct 1, it hurt for about a week, as they put one stich in place at the exit to give it a chance to heal. Once the stich was pulled, didnt hurt. The cath is held in place like any other one, with a little balloon that is filled with saline upon insertion. They change the cath every 4-6 weeks for sanitary reasons.
If you don't have a UTI going on, the changes dont hurt. They deflate the balloon, and it just pulls out of the hole. They only have 2 minutes to insert a new one, or the hole tries to close up, which would not be a good thing. My uro change do the change incredibly fast.
My exits toward my left leg, that was my choice, I am very left handed and just made sense to me.

Thanks Sheldon - still hanging in there. Sat. was a much better day with the foley gone, still some hurt, but not like the day before

yeah, 142, today is sunny and in mid 60 F range, went downtown Greenville for brunch, and to hear my oldest son's Jazz Trio working the resturant crowd.

David I'm glad you were able to remove the cath without to much effort. May this be the start of an upward trend of healing. Yes the weather is starting to turn spring in our area I hope so anyway. Hope all goes well with the next doctors visit. I thought about you yesterday when my wife and I were out walking in yard and my beagle starting crawling through the culvert pipe I told my wife David would call her a sewer lobster. All though she is bigger than a crawfish I thought of the conversation in the last chat session.

David, glad you got out today and did something enjoyable! Truly sounds like you are making great progress, physically and emotionally.

Neal, my friend, perhaps you could train your dog to sniff out sewer lobsters the way pigs in france find truffles. Might be a new income source for you, then you could sell them to our Canjun Jeff alias "C.A" down in LA. lol. Thanks for the kind thoughts.

Thank you Sephie, it's amazing what the removal of steady pain can do to ones well-being. Still sore, still hurting, but only at a fraction of how I was doing even as late as Friday. It was beautiful here all weekend, mid 60s and sunny skies. Some early budding plants/trees already at work opening up. The step for me, starting this week, is blocking off the SP cath for periods of time, and see what ability I have after all these months to pee on my own. I am excited and scared at the same time. I do have the safety of the SP to turn back to, but will be deeply distressed if my own ability isn't there after all these months and the past 2 corrective surgeries. All I can do is hope for the best.
