Hi Kylie,

Welcome to HW. Your dad's a lucky guy to have you. Don't worry. He will be around to play with his grandchild and embarrass you for a while.
If you've looked around the site you will find that we all look at the issue through different lenses: some are positive, some are down, some are rose colored. It is a personal experience.
A recent topic here is "Benefits of PCa". Can you believe it? There are guys who actually found positives to getting their walnuts taken out.

You will find plenty of good technical information on the net. In my case, after the studying was done and the decisions made, I found that this site, with its camaraderie, helped me more than any technical publications. Your dad might get a lot out of it, too.

Remember, you are still his little girl and certain topics are not usually meant for inter-generational discussion. My two adult sons still think my wife and I only had sex twice in our lives.
Continue to do research but go easy on him.

Alf- are you now living in the Netherlands? Suffolk is such a pretty part of the UK. I was 20 at the time and what they called a Gap student who helped supervise in the girls boarding house, sport and class etc. I miss the afternoon teas and 13th century village castle :)

Jeff- thankyou. As you said I realise that a lot of topics post op dad will not want to talk about with his daughter, and I will respect that. Yes my olds only had sex three times...;)

I hope all of your psa results are excellent in the coming months... Already I feel a genuine soft spot for the men on this forum :)

Hello Kylie,

Being supportive of your dad in his journey right now is the best thing you can do.  I know that diagnosis of cancer can be scary.  It occupies a large portion of the brain that you would rather use to think about more pleasant things.  I can say that as time goes by and there are some positive milestones in your dad's treatment that the anxiety will die down for you.  I have even heard my wife in conversation saying that "we" sometimes forget that I have/had cancer.  I can assure you that I have not forgotten, but it gives me comfort to know that she does not have a lot of stress about it.  Tomorrow is the 1 year anniversary of my surgery.  I had the blood drawn today for the followup psa test.  This is by far the one with the least amount of anxiety.  I have accepted that whatever comes my way is what is meant to be.  Best wishes for you, your dad, and your family,

Welcome.
I am 56, and had DaVinci robotic surgery (oct/09) after an august 09 biopsy of 9 of 12 cores positive, Gleason 3+4 in 2, 4+4 in 7. Bone & Lymph node scan was negative, although I was told to see this as "not bad news" instead of "good news". Post surgery, the final pathology was Gleason 4+5, so I am off to Radiation next week.
My doc is as agressive as my PC - so perhaps I am early to ratiation, but he believes in the "kill it before it grows" philosophy, and I can't find fault in that.
I don't have a wife/kids, so I envy your dad. Neither am I the on-line type, but I found HW after my surgery, and have found it to be home to a great crew.
In the States, I can't say that robotic / DaVinci is priced any differently than traditional open - my surgeon's practice has docs who only do one or the other, so my choice was on the personality and results of the Dr., not the method.
If I can offer any thoughts, I will be happy to. I am just another traveler on this path.

glad u found this room as it has helped me out a lot since i got the pc news so much info in here its great u need al the info u can get so to help him make the rite choices as to treatment etc and of hes neds al ur love and suport hope al goes wel

My dictionary of castles suggests Framlingham as being the only one in Suffolk that is 13th century.
Do you mean "school tea", or English afternoon tea? People used to think me mad for liking school food.
As for clotted cream and strawberry jam: In the summer I often make my own scones and have found that some Italian cream cheeses make an excellent substitute for clotted cream. And if I didn't know how to make a decent cuppa then I'd be stuck.
If it needs to be tackled, then may be you'd be able to talk to your mum about the "awkward" side-effects

Yes the village I lived in was Framlingham Alf, a very pretty market village with so much history. The school lunches weren't bad! It was the afternoon teas with the scones and cakes that got me bulging out of my clothes by the time I returned to oz.

When I fly east for dads surgery I will get all of the specific details and post as a signature on here..I'm sure I will need help interpreting it all :) the hardest thing right now is the not knowing and being so far from family. It will have Bern four mths since I last saw dad and I can't wait for that reunion cuddle albeit the circumstances.

Q: how long after the surgery will it take for the pathology results to come back? I want to get as much info as I can while I am there.

I guessed Framlington College too (amazing what the internet can find for you - the pictures of the castle look amazing) I was at a boy's only version of the same kind of school in the middle of Devon called Blundells.

I'm not sure what the OZ norm is for pathology results after an operation, but they had my path details ready on the day I went back to the hospital to have my catheter out, which was 7 days later.

Enjoy the reunion hug. But be careful how you cuddle your dad after the op if his tum's a bit tender.
