Perineal and Rectum Pain

Good to hear from you. Those handouts that Dr. Shah's satff gives out to patients talks about both types of pain and that it is normal. Having said that if you read the recovery posts on this forum you realize quickly that we all heal differently. Advil helped a little as did walking but there were times I just had to lay down and find the right position. But I also eventually bought a donut pillow, although it was more for my neuropathy I think. Couldnt really take the heavy duty pain med as it gave me nausea.

Hang in there as it will ease up little by little and one day you will think your about back to normal. Urination should get back to a more typical flow fairly soon, so keep walking and drinking water. I had to sit on the pot for at least two to three months to empty my bladder. Others might have some good advice to give as well.

I'm nine months out and still have some perineal discomfort --- I'd not want to ride a bicycle! However, looking back three months it is better now than then, and then it was better than three months before that, so I expect at some point it will totally resolve and in the meantime it's no such a big deal. A small price to pay to be rid of that cancerous prostate!

In the weeks following surgery I took the max allowed of extra strength tylenol --- and it was probably two plus months until I was totally off them --- due to the perineal pain. Lying down was always good, and for $99 I found the most marvelous lounge chair that tilted back. Loved to sleep in that chair on the verandah on those hot summer afternoons with my wife bringing me cold drinks and snacks. I've asked my doctor about what surgery I might slate for this June so I can again, with dignity and good reason, spend the summer in my chair on the verandah.

I'm a little ahead of you. Took 7 days after cath removal before I could pee a stream. I also get sharp pains couple times a day through penis along with air bubbling threw penis end also. Saw the Doc yesterday and he said this was all part of the healing. I've been having diahrea type problems everytime I try and pee. Doc took me off stool soft and antibiotics and wants me to start taking Activia. 

I suggest drinking lots of water (lots of referrals told me to). I was lying on a chaise lounge reading and just kept drinking when I finally felt my bladder filling up. Held it in and finally peed a stream. I was so happy I continued to pour the fluids down even though I was up peeing every 15 minutes. Loved to see that stream and have some control.

Hang in there, it will work itself out.
