Could not handle the Flomax but went back to see the new Uro today and he has me on Cipro for two more weeks - Prostate seems to be shrinking & he's pretty sure I don't have PCa but wants a Biopsy done for sure to rule it out.

I told him I still had a May17th (this Monday) Biopsy appt with my other Uro and asked him if it mattered if I got it done by him. He said no problem, he could use the results either way!

So for sure I am going to get the Biopsy done sooner than later just so I know for sure what future treatments to get.

Still having problems urinating on my own & still self-cathing so hopefully a Turp or maybe Laserlight can fix that.

How soon after a Biopsy is surgery usually done?

Also he told me to avoid Advil/Aspirin for as least five days before. Is that critical so I don't bleed? I've been using about 400mg of Advil a day for pain - should I switch to Tylenol?

Surgery is usually done 6 or more weeks after the biopsy. You want everything to heal before taking it out.
That delay also gives you time to say goodbye to it.

Man Midi U have lots of stuff going on! Colonoscopy....Did you have it done?...Extremely high PSA!!! If your urologist feels it could STILL be an infection I bet he will NOT concur with the biopsy! (happened to me) and will insist the infection be eliminated first.

You've probably seen my numbers before but ....74 years old / DiVinci 2/10/10 / Gleason 3+4=7 and PSA 6.7 prior to removal and after removal "undetectable".

Follow your doctor's advice: you do need to stop the advil as biopsies do result in prostate bleeding. (You will see that possibly upon urinating after the biopsy and especially upon ejaculation -- that will be normal so don't worry when not if that happens).

I suspect you will have to wait 6-8 weeks after the biopsy regarding further procedures.

Good luck -- so Monday is the big biopsy day. You should have results later in the week.

Too late - was in such pain - had to take 200mg advil this morning or could barely get outta bed...

Midi I cannot imagine why you are not receiving very specific directions form your doctors!!! Do you still have a urinary tract infection? Surely the urologist has a culture done when you visit him especially since your EXTREMELY high PSA suggests either an infection OR perhaps the big "C"! Of the three biopsy's I had over time, the first two were ugly as my then urologist didn't use a numbing agent. Changed Urologists and all the difference in the world.....NO aspirin (or similar) a week or so before the biopsy in order to reduce bleeding. Best to postpone a biopsy UNLESS your urologist is SURE your problem is something other the an infection.

Hang in there as yo should know something soon I would say. There has to be an answer.

No answer yet - but the Uro is saying my urine is coming back negative. For some reason , I have bad back pain which only advil seems to help - should I post-pone the Biopsy?

With all due respect, some of the questions you are asking are VERY individualized and can ONLY be answered by your doctor (I am talking about your asking us if you should postpone your biopsy). Ask your doctor.

It seems to me there might be some other pain killer you can take for the back pain that might ease it but won't void a biopsy procedure.

With all that's going on, you really should not wait too long on this biopsy thing -- just think how relieved you will be when/if it comes back negative.

Midi...I couldn't hook up to that link. If your Uro says you don't have an infection I personally feel the biopsy you have scheduled is the right thing for you to do. Is the urologist who claims your urine culture is negative for infection going to be the one doing your biopsy?

No - its my other Uro who is doing the Biopsy. My new Uro says it doe not matter which Doctor does it.

According to this Website - it says stop taking Aspirin 7-10 days before anything but Advil for three days:

Midi...apparently you have faith in your original urologist and that's your call. Huge difference in doctors and methods though. I encourage you to ask him if he uses a NUMBING agent!!! My first two nine core biopsy's were done without NOT FUNNY! and the last one 12/23/09 - 12 cores was done WITH numbing and no big deal! Fickle finger never did "feel" my cancer even though it's location was known. What size did you say your prostate was? (ultrasound is part of the biopsy so that's another base you will have covered).

Bottom line...good luck on the 17th!

I opted for sedation (actually, the operating room was available; if I didn't want sedation it would have been 10 days later!)

Thanks not sure on my size yet but I'm pretty sure they use a numbing agent - did you have any discomfort or bleeding afterwards?

Hey Midi and good morning. For the last one (biopsy) yes I had the numbing agent and very little bleeding at all. Ejaculate is bloody for quite a while after and then traces of blood for a few weeks.....Did some reading / viewed a TURP on U tube......While doing the biopsy is still the right thing to do MOST of your symptoms (my opinion) suggest the TURP may be to blame for MOST of your symptoms as it agitates the prostate - PSA and perhaps scar tissue is behind your obstructions and the need to catheterize.

I have not had the Trup yet and am thinking of canceling the Biopsy. There has to be something more wroong with me due to all the back , side and adominal pain. I had a cysto done and he could find no scar tissue or blockage - what do you suggest?

Midi I must have read about a TURP on someone else's post. So long as you keep catheterizing yourself to pee you have a serious urinary problem. The fact that your urologist "felt" a lump on your prostate could mean it's just a cyst or a harmless nodule OR it could be something worse. To postpone the biopsy, I feel is a major mistake. Would imagine it's safe to say that everyone on this site / subject has had at least one and some of us many more biopsy's. Urinary problems and pain could be bladder, kidney's, and hernia to list a few.

I know you don't want to have a biopsy, but you need to get it done. Really. Regarding all the other stuff (advil/aspirin) while research is nice you need to check with your urologist to see what his policy is on that.

 

I suspect much of your pain is due to your inability to urinate. Over time, I suspect muscles get irritated (including back muscles), etc.

 

Ideally, the biopsy will be negative and you can seek some procedural relief for your BPH. I still recommend the Greenlight Laserscope (based on my own research). I was probably heading for that down the road, until PC changed things!

Ok i will do it - but do you think me still taking the Advil will cause extra bleeding? I can't seem to live with the pain without it...

ASK YOUR DOCTOR!!! Surely they have a policy.

Perhaps, as I suggested, they can prescribe something else just for now for the pain. If you are still on advil, and your biopsy is set for Monday, you need to call someone...like...NOW.

I have to reiterate that this question should not be answered by someone on an internet forum. This really needs to be addressed with your doctor.

Just called & he said I should be OK but don't take anymore - she said try Tylenol which does not really help me - I also have been taking a small dose of Valium to help me sleep so maybe that wiill be enough.

She also said results take 7-10 days to get back - is that abouta normal time? Also I have to do a Fleet enema a few hours before I go in - is that to clear out the bowels?

Yes, the Fleet enema is to clear your lower bowel.

That worried me as much as the procedure but it was no big deal.

7-10 days is on the long side. If you do it Monday, you still may get the results that week...maybe.

Now after I get the results - how long of healing do I have to do before any other surgical treatment is condsidered if needed?
