Which Medication for Urgency and frequency caused by RT

I've just had RT Session 24 of 33 and I saw the doc afterwards.

As I'm now having to pee about every 30 minutes during the day time and every two hours at night I asked doc for help and she has given me Tamulosin to help deal with this. (I think this is called Flomax in the States)

I've seen lots of mention of Flomax in threads, but is this the right thing for me to have now? The slip in the packet says it's to help me pee, whereas I thought I needed something to stop me peeing.

And if it is the right stuff has anyone had any problems, side-effects etc?

A lot of people have used Flomax for that purpose and I tried it but it did not work for me. Dr. told me if it was effective I would know within 1 week. Destrol or Detrol was the other he mentioned but he said he had side effects and I told him I would wait. My urologist then gave me a two weeks worth of a new product that you rub on your body, Gelnique, but not sure it even helped. It has taken over 2 months post rad for me to be back around normal, but I am probably an exception as most men have taken far less time.

Hang in there as it is a pain in the neck but should resolve itself, but you just might try flomax for 1 week to see if it make a difference.

Alf, Flomax also for me....and this seems to be the case for most others on this site. I'm sure someone else will weigh in if there are other drug options. Like you, I was also puzzled by the fact that I was taking something that helped urination in order to achieve the opposite effect. My rad/onc said that Flomax helped relax the urinary tract is such a way that allowed  the baldder to become fuller before the need to void....thus making you actually "go" less. I had no side effects and actually took two tablets per day until 30 days after my last rad treatment at which time I went back to one. I am about to stop taking it at all....I'm getting up less at night and don't need to go as often during the day either. If I notice a change, I'll start up again. Believe you are taking the right thing and it will help. Regards, Joe

Flomax twice a day. It takes about 4 days for it to take affect. It won't stop the problem, but will sure make it more tolorable. It's just one of those things you have to wait out. Also a high dose of Ibupropin, 600-800 mg also helps as it stops any inflamation. Don't take the high dose ibupropin for more than 10 days.

I took flomax and detrol for about 10 months before testing positive for pc. My urologist put me on them because of urgency. I could not sit through a 1 hour meeting at work without finally having to get up and go to the restroom.

I did not experience any side effects from either of these drugs, but they only worked for me for about 3 months before my old symptoms came back.

Know this is not much but hope it helps.

During radiation the Dr prescribed "peridium"--don't remember exactly what for--turned urine rust colored and also underware!!!  Had flare up recently of the urgency bit, Dr prescribed 'oxybutinin" and later added DeTrol.  Works, but sure dries mouth--like a mouth full of cotton with elmers glue.  Be sure to drink lots of H2O.

Alf,

I was put on Hytrin (Terazosin Hcl), and it seemed to work quit well, and quickly, for the urgency/frequency. I believe it is less expensive than Flowmax. I think Pyridium (phenazopyridine hydrochloride) is used for pain and burning. Pyridium is available over-the-counter (AZO is one product) here in the U.S.
