My biopsy is scheduled on Monday. I'll be glad when it's over, the last two weeks I've been dreading it but I'll be glad to get it done. My bout with prostatitis, which occurred in early January, has resulted in abnormally high PSA readings, a very low FREE PSA, and some abnormalities on DRE. Don't know what to expect, but at least i'll know something soon. Hoping the biopsy shows no cancer and simply (?) lingering effects of the prostatitis. Will post results when I get them. Thanks..

Try this: As my URO was about to have his way with me (biopsy) I asked him if he was going to buy me dinner afterwards....He said his schedule was full but that he'd send me flowers....Maybe you'll have better luck getting the flowers tongue

Lol..thanks....I'm always remembering an episode of NYPD Blue where Sipowicz (Dennis Franz) is told by his urologist of the date for their next appointment. He responds, "Thanks I'll draw a smiley face on my calendar so I remember."

Glenn, good luck. I know that many members here had bad experiences with their biopsy's. But for me it was a mere annoyance. BB

good luck on that biopsy. for me, not much of a pain deal, and feeling humiliated and abused by the probe, lol.

i did 3 biopsies, first 2 were a year apart, 3rd and final was like 6 weeks after 2nd.

I had my biopsy about 4 years ago. The anxiety before the procedure was pretty bad, but the actual rape wasn't that bad. I only had 8 samples take and it was all over quite quickly. It was uncomfortable of cause, but the pain for me was only about a 3/10. I found that the noise the machine made for each prick was worse than the actual pain. All in all, better than a root canal :-).
Hopefully you have similar experience.

Good Luck, Glenne!  My husband said it was very uncomfortable, but nothing he couldn't handle.  Someone suggested that the doctor count after each sample taken.   He said it made it easier to know approximately how many were left.  Either way, you'll get through this!

Everyone is different, but my 12 core biopsy was not even close to what I had dreaded. I did take a low mg valium and hour before and a lortab as I walked through the door. The probe didn't feel any worse than the thorough DRE at the beginning. The snapping sound of the biopsy is a little startling, but I can not actually say that there was pain involved. I was a little sore for about 48 hours - nothing major - and attended a concert that evening where I sat for 3 hours. Here's wishing you the best.

My experience was very similar to OKboy--the doctor injected a nerve block that pretty much made the sample taking painless. The snaps startled me too. My penis had a mild sting for a couple of hours afterward but that was it. Good luck!

Glenn, you'll do just fine and it'll be over before you even know it. The anticipation of the "unknown" is almost always the worst. How well I know!

thanks to all of you for your help, and your postings. I will indeed be glad when Monday is gone, although waiting a week or two for results doesn't thrill me. I was particularly interested in OKBOYS posting, because you mentioned that prostatitis showed in 3 samples. My PSA rose to 28 after a bout of prostatitis in January, which is when all this started, and i didnt realize that prostatitis could show up in the results. What does that mean? What would it mean?

Glenne: The form that I asked for and received from the lab that assessed the biopsy listed each one of the cores collected and the results for that core. Each one had the result of "benign prostate matter or material??" and three of the cores also stated "chronic prostatitis indicated." My PSA continued to rise after the biopsy and 8 months later I asked my family doc if he would be willing to prescribe a dose of Cipro as prostatitis symptoms, while not debilitating, had worsened. I did that in Feb. 2010 and most of the symptoms have disappeared and my PSA has come down to 2.8. My fPSA is still at 15.5% - wish that were better - but overall, I believe that prostatitis was the culprit for the sudden shift upward in my PSA. Good luck.

Okboy, thanks so much for responding. I had a "classic" case of prostatitis in January....chills, urine infection, put on Cipro for a week and then Septra for six weeks. PSA went from 28, to 6.6, to 5.1 over next six months. I guess the "something" they find on DRE makes it important to get this biopsy, although i have no symptoms but high PSA, low FREE PSA and feel like i'm urinating every hour....well I guess that's enough to have it checked.

Hoping for the best, but at the same time trying to prepare for any scenario. Thanks so much.

The others are right, the dread is the worst part. Yours is not the first butt they have seen. yeah

The staff and the doctor will make it very easy for you.

The best part is walking back through the waiting room with a big smile on your face and looking at the other poor guys waiting and dreading like we all did.
