!st day of MET radiation

Today was my first of 10 radiation treatments for the MET they found on my leg.

As always, and like others this post is just to describe the process, the machine used and the dosage planned. This info may be helpful to others that begin to walk the path of PCa.

The machine being used is the Varian 2300ix. A quick look on the net describes it as a machine that delivers IGRT/IMRT. I lay down on the table and am aligned via the 3 tatoos that were place on me in the setup/simulation procedures done last week. I have one on each hip for horizontal alignment and one on my abdomen over the hip area. My met is in the femural head at the hip joint.

The machine then takes two xrays to insure the alignment is correct. The head of the machine rotates around the table and takes one from the top and one from the bottom.

Then the machine delivers the radiation dosage in the same way. One from the top and one from the bottom. The entire procedure took less than 15 minutes.

I am to receive 300 centi-Gy total being delivered at the rate of 30cGy per day.

There it is for those that need it. Just trying to do my part to give back to this wonderful site.

Michael you are sooo right that 10 treatments is much better that than 35 I had with IMRT.

Jerry it is my wish for you that you never have to go through any further radiation at all.

Hi Sonny. Thanks for the update. 10 treatments should pass quickly and from what I understand, here are no side effects. The term cGy is new to me. When I had my SRT they only told me that I received 2Gy/treatment for 33 days (66Gy total). So, is 30cGy like .3Gy? Just curious.

Thank you one and all for your continued support and kind words.

Mag, I asked the question today at my 2nd treatment and was told that 100cGy = 1 Gy. So I am receiving 30Gy according to them. I guess that means 3Gy per day. More than I received per day during IMRT, but I guess they can do that when you are just doing bone instead on areas that contain internal organs.

So 2 down and 8 to go.

Hi Tony. Thanks for the info. Hopefully the remaining treatments will pass quickly for you with no issues.

You said in your initial post that you will receive 300cGy total (30cGy/day). So, if 100cGy=1Gy, Then your total would be something like 3Gy or .3Gy/day (my head is spinning from all that math). I was better at math when I was younger. It doesn't really matter ,as long as treatments are effective and do what they are meant to do..

Mag my bad, total is 3000cGy at 300cGy per day. Sorry about that, confused the heck out of me too. They have always talk in Gys before.

So the math is right. I am receiving 3Gy per day and 30Gy overall.

Jeez this math is harder than the actual treatments themselves. I am wore out and not from the radiation. LOL

Sonny, If I'm not being too nosey, what type of aches and pains were you experiencing that led you and/or your Dr. to believe it may be bone MET?  Thanks and good luck to ya.

Tony, sure glad we cleared up this big fiasco :-). The reasoning was that in the future I (or some of the members) will have to follow your lead (heaven forbid) and are therefore interested in how many Gy are used for this. It's a little strange that they would use the term cGy instead of the usual Gy. Anyway, hope your headache is a bit better now...............I know mine is :-).

Boy, I'm sure glad you got the Sonny/Tony thing cleared up before I found this thread. I was having enough trouble with all that math and then the name thing! It isn't just my age that gets me confused --- I live in a confusing age. At least, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Sonny, thanks for the report. I trust all that juice is frying those little rascals into oblivion.

So, what you do when you're not getting zapped? Polish the monster in the driveway?

In my pre-surgery days I tried to polish the monster in the driveway, but the neighbors called to cops.

OH WAIT!! You were talking about the RV weren't you? Well the cops won't let me polish it in the driveway either. The city has an ordinance against it.

I apologize for not answering you sooner. I must have missed that you were asking questions. My bad entirely. And nothing is too personal for the discussions on this board.

I did not really have any pains or outward signs that something was wrong other than I had 4 PSA tests following my radiation that indicated there was still the presence of PCa cells in my body.

My Radiation Oncologist turned me over to an Oncologist and we discussed the need for additional tests to try and nail it down. It was the Sodium Fluoride PET Scan that found the met on my leg.

He and the Radiation Oncologist concluded that it was best to radiate it now rather than wait until it caused me pain or discomfort. They felt that since it was located in a major weight bearing area that it best to deal with it now before it weakened the bone and I faced a possible fracture or worse.

So today I finished my first week of radiation and all went well. Did 4 treatments this week and have 6 to go.

Hey Sonny, I do really appreciate that info. I have been having some rather minor joint pain (like in both hip joints) however it may well be due to some old age related stuff (going on 74). That's one of the problems with "older" age, ya just never know if those aches and pains are or are not really associated with age. Of course, now with almost any ache/pain, I quickly begin to wonder if it may possibly be PC related..... It's always something to keep me in the worry mode. Thanks again.
