Is it normal to leak through side of catherer?

I just got surgery for prostate cancer I been home 10 days and everything was looking alright until this morning. I was trying to have a bm and felt an urge to pee it was so intense that I was waiting to see it go down the tube, instead a stream of blood and urine leak out of the side of catherer. Am waiting for the doctor to get back to me. mean time i found this web site and am giving it a try. I am new to this and english is not my first language so excuse my spelling. any help would be great appreciated.

Yuyo,

A lot of us with Foley catheters have had the leakage around the tube.

It is usually just because of the urethra sutures (blood and scab tissue).

However, you should always check with your doctor if you have problems or questions.

I talked with my doc about this and he said it is normal.  I wrapped the tube with toilet paper to keep from spraying everywhere and let it go.

The only concern that I would have is the suggestion of "Waiting to see a flow from the tube" --and not seeing it.

I would be concerned -- Flow from the line should be natural and uninhibited.. To be spraying from around the outside, and NO tube flow, would lead me to think the tube was blocked (by a blood clot).
I would be worried that you felt the need to pee.. That should not happen, if the bladder was draining normally. Pressure from having a full bladder (not draining) might be of concern.
But your URO should know best.. Make sure they understand "No Flow" from the catheter, and Bladder-Pressure, and leaking from the outside.

You might go back and edit your original post and see if you can add a subject.. Good Health !

perfectly normal and common. don't worry about it. Just put a piece of toilet paper around the end of your penis to catch it.  There are lots of involuntary muscle contractions during a bowel movement. they get hampered by the catheter.

I leaked quite a bit around the tube. Unfortunately it was good training for my incontinence. (Sigh)
When they removed the foley, the nurse noticed the ball was only filled with 15ml of saline.

I may also suggest not bearing down quite so hard. Maybe you need some stool softeners as well.

I had two other tubes that went into my ureters called stints as well as the catheter, so leakage was very common for me.

Goodlife made a valid point - you should be on a good stool softener for weeks if not months after surgery. Straining is bad. STRAINING IS BAD. I'll pass on the repetitions, but just to be sure, you do not want to have even anything close to constipation for 6 months or more. SAS - Sit and Slide. After other colon surgeries, it beats pain and bleeding.

What you describe happened to me too the first couple of days.

Do something to make it easier to have BMs

I found it really does work to take something to read with you. Also helped if I massaged the small of my back or rocked slowly from one buttock to the other.

However tell the doc if it's more than a little pee plus a little blood or if nothing much is going into the bag. (And remember that only a little bit of blood can make urine look very red)
