Went to the hospital this morning for a cystogram before having the catheter removed. I've had this thing now for 13 days. Doc says i'm not healed enough yet, got to leave it in for another 8 days. Won't take it out until next tuesday now. argh! I guess I'd rather they err on the side of caution, but this thing is really starting to get on my nerves. I guess they found a small leak when they put in the dye, nothing serious he says, but we want to make sure its healed before we remove the catheter.

Happened to me - went in after 8 days to have the catheter removed and failed the test - they kept it in an additional week, then removed it without a retest.

My husband was not tested....just had the catheter removed after 11 days. Only question asked - was he having any blood? He was so irritated about the catheter after 11 days, I would not have wanted to see his reaction if it had to remain in place for 8 more days.

You have my sympathy. So sorry you have to go through this.

Five weeks for me - thank you very much.

Apparently getting a cystogram done is rare around these parts...As much fun as they AREN'T, I would have rather done the cystogram then the trip to the ER to get the cath put back in.

Thank you for the link that answered my question I have had ever since I read here that some patients with similar treatment (RALP) get the cystogram and some don't.

My Uro (who normally isn't shy about giving me tests) didn't even mention a cystogram as part of my treatment. So far so good.

My catheter was in for 10 days but I was in the hospital the whole time for other complications. I asked about having a cystogram prior to removal since putting the thing back in was the LAST thing anyone wants to do. Was told they didn't do that. Instead, my surgeon tested for leaks during surgery prior to finishing everything up. Not sure how they do that (thinking of a pressure test like a radiator! lol) but I had little leakage within days of removing the catheter.

Sorry to hear about anyone having to wear it more than a week. The do become uncomfortable and can become a real issue if not maintained properly such as routine cleaning around the tip of the penis.

I had an SP cath.

They had me turn it off (pee normally) to test it for quite a few hours.

my original cath was in for 63 days after surgery, and that was before i began all my stricture problems

My Doc's plan was out 2 weeks after surgery.

At my 2 week visit he did a cystogram and said 1 more week should do the trick.

At the end of week 3 he said 1 more week and it will be perfect.

Week 4 finally the cath was removed.

I guess you can't rush progress !!

I'd not heard of it before and clicked on the Pubmed link from pipedream (thank you).  Is it only used if you have the robotic RP or do they use it for the procedure my husband had - open RP?  The link just mentioned the use of it for robotic surgery.  His cath came out with no comments on testing for leakage before hand at 8 days post open RP...Nurse did the removal with the briefest of visits by the surgeon afterwards.

I had robotic, and they took the catheter out after a week, with cystogram. Not sure if that would have made a difference, but I had to have it put back in for another week. Like Steve said, would have certainly preferred a cystogram to the trip to the ER, if there was a choice. They did do a cysto before taking the catheter out the second time.

I had a cystogram before surgery, but no mention of one when the tube was pulled (8 days) and no mention of antibiotics. I later suffered quite a severe UTI and had 3 lots of antibiotics to clear it, but all told quite happy with the NHS in Britain.

I had a cystogram 10 days after the operation. The radiologist had me positioned so I could watch the whole thing on the screen. They filled my bladder 1/3 full of what I thought he said was iodine. I felt nothing. They used the cath to fill it. He pointed out everything and when done said I see no reason why my urologist would not remove it. When to the urologist's office 2 hours later with a CD. Doc looked at the CD and said it's coming out. Nurse said drop your drawers and lay down. Felt a tug and it was gone.
The cystogram the urologist did before the operation was him inserting a long probe up my penis. That was uncomfortable. The probe had a camera and I watched that on a srceen. Hospital one was an xray not a camera.

Technically , the procedure before surgery was a cystoscopy, involving a cystoscope. The cystogram is indeed a pressure test to check for leaks. Whether we had an RP or and open, they still cut the urethra, and sew it back to gether.

It seems to me to be a prudent measure. Leaking pee into the freshly disturbed prostate area can't be good. With my 1 in 6 chance of getting prostate cancer, I didn't want to test my lucky streak by having a leaky repair job.

It was 2 weeks for me as well.
