coldfinger in another thread posted for the first time. Welcome to the Forum, thanks for joining us.

He is a RP and Radiation graduate. He asked:
CAN ANYONE COMMENT ON ED AFTER RADIATION vs RP? I know the nerves are damaged, but once the cancer is killed, don't nerves return, at least partially, after a yr or so? Also, visual stimuli seems to work better, or at least as good as the shot. I wonder if invreasing my shot to 0.5 or > would give better results?

cant answer your ED question, but many others can. i have only one set of nerves (right side) and have never experienced

I was told by the medics that I had zero chance of natural erections after surgery plus SRT. I believed them and had an implant...works fine after a process. Mind you I first went though viagra, cialis etc plus penile injections..no good.

I just had RP and nerves spaired. MMMMM Nothing happening down there unless I get chemically induces. Moved from pump to pills to injections.

I think the Dr really under play the ED stuff.

I have been on Eligard and Jalyn since October 2010, have had two High Dose Radiation treatments (Dec 6 and 13) and 24 IMRT radiation sessions...my 25th and final is tonight. I have not suffered from ED at any time. For a few days after each HDR I am sore, swollen and bruised in the area so choose not to be active. I am confident that I will be fine and have no ED, urinary, or bowel problems from the HDR and IMRT.

From what I understand of the two procedures, surgery affects the nerves directly (there are many small nerves in addition the the main ones) and radiation affects the blood vessels. Both are needed for errections. ED meds work best on ED caused by reduced blood flow by increasng the supply of blood to achieve an errection. When both surgery and radiation are used it is a double whammy and chances of ED go up dramaticallly.

My radiation oncologist told me the same thing that JT said above. She indicated that even though I did not have ED problems from surgery, I would very likely have them from the SRT. Funny thing is that I seem to have gotten though both OK. I am still able to have relatively good erections. Although I'm not sure that I should feel good about it. Does it mean the SRT was not as effective as it could be? Sometimes I feel like this is all a crap shoot.
