Post-op 5 days, really sore throat

Have a really sore throat after RRP on Wednesday. Everything else seems to be healing. Catheter, of course, is a pain in the neck.

My guess would be that the sore throat is unrelated to your surgery.

could be from the endotrachial tube they used to have you on the respirator during the procedure...This usually goes away oin a day or so though.....My guess is they used an oversized tube for whatever reasons on you so the vocal cords and surrounding area is still inflamed... losenges will help or find a tea with "slippery elm" that will coat the throat and it will feel better no matter what the cause is.

Flytyer2, glad you had a successful procedure and are well on your road to recovery. I would suspect it was the endo tube also. Give it a couple more days and see if it eases up. The old remedy of honey and lemon may ease the inflammation for you.

Good news to hear that you made it thru your surgery ok. I, too, had a sore throat for a week or two due to the breathing tube used during surgery. All the best on your continued recovery. Take care and hang in there.

Great news that you in recovery. Yep had the same issue Dr said it was the Edno Tube and give it a few days. You will be fine...I do agree that darn Cath is a real bother. Do keep us posted.

I see two possibilities. First, from being intubated during sugery. Second, I had a horribly sore throat as a side-effect of 5mg daily dose of cialis. It resolved by lowering the daily dose.

I suffered about a month of sore throat provoked, the doctor thought, by the tube (DaVinci surgery), but worsened because I had sinus issues while in the hospital, and the drainage did not help.

I had the sore throat as well, not too bad though. I did notice it took me about a month before I got my taste buds back.. for awhile there NOTHING tasted good or like it should. But that eventually went away.

During my da vinci they told me I would be breathing mechanically this meant to me that they stopped my regular respiration and had whatever they call it do my breathing. In the davinci surgery I think you are at something like a 45 degree angle head down so that your organs shift by gravity away from the surgery site. This might end up being a little rougher on you breathing wise? However you will be having the catheter out soon and if it persists you will be in a good spot to ask some questions if need be.

The sore throat after surgery was pretty annoying for me, too, and it was definitely because of the intubation.  However, mine posed a special problem because I have sleep apnea and use a CPAP machine.  The sore, swollen throat did not mix well with the apnea, and I was very glad when it went away.  I have a number of suggestions for an apnea sufferer who is having prostate surgery,  but that's for another post.

I was just wondering the other day if you got back home to Arkansas OK.  Our friend from South Dakota who was at Mayo around the same time you were had a smooth trip home and is doing well.

Congratulations on your successful surgery.  Who's going to remove your catheter?

Yup, you can blame the anesthesiologist on that sore throat..I could not talk right for a month...I talked like Donald Duck..
