So I made a leap of faith and bought a new house by the NJ shore. We love it here, but the climate is a bit more rough even though it is only 10-15 miles away from the old house.
Sunday, the snow and wind started in earnest by mid day. We are snowed in and enjoying it. All of a sudden the power goes out around 8pm. I am not concerned - the house is well insulated and the power will come back shortly, it always does, right?
So we called it an early night and went to bed. In the middle of the night the temperature dropped to 58. So, I thought I'd get the fireplace going. I have a gas fireplace and I couldn't turn it on even after reading the manual. So I turned on gas range and went to bed.
Monday morning the power is still out and I have two feet of snow on the driveway and five foot drifts against the garage wall. So we are stranded: no heat, no phone (i have voice over IP), and two cell phones running out of juice.
It is now 24 hours later, I dug the garage out thanks to my neighbours, I charged my phone from a car charger, but I missed a day of work and going to have to go to the office tomorrow without a shower.
But it was nice change of pace and a lot of time to talk with my wife. on the whole, not such a bad couple of days.
And the cancer? I only remembered it when I looked at my Web bookmarks.
Happy Holidays!
